  16. Council leaving some Coventry children at 'continuing risk'published at 15:13 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

Some children under the watch of Coventry's children's services are at continuing or increased risk, says Ofsted following its first inspection of the department since rating it "inadequate" in 2014.

In an overview of its findings, the regulator said: "There has been insufficient progress in ensuring that outcomes for children and young people in need of help and protection have improved.

"In cases seen, the majority of young people had not received appropriate responses to the risks they faced even though those risks were identified."

Saying that in "too many cases" risk had not been acted on quickly enough to "ensure that all children are safe", it concluded: "Some children and young people remain at risk and as a result their outcomes remain poor."

Ofsted found there had been progress in reducing worker's caseloads, auditing the quality of work and understanding thresholds for intervention, but "much remains to be done to enhance the quality of practice and decision making in individual cases".

    Quote Message

“We are constantly evaluating our own work and we know the areas we’re doing well in and the areas that we need to continue to focus on. Although it was only a small sample by Ofsted, this external feedback helps to reinforce our own assessments and supports our relentless focus on improvement."

John Gregg, Coventry City Council's director of children’s services
