  2. Council will try to buy Wellesbourne airfieldpublished at 14:10 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Stratford District councillors have voted to try to buy Wellesbourne airfield to stop it from being closed down for good.

    The local authority says an application to make a compulsory purchase order for the site is possible, if, following negotiations with the owners, a sale is deemed "not achievable".

    Last week the council received an application to demolish several buildings at the airfield which was once earmarked for 1,600 new homes, raising questions over the site's continuing aviation use.

    At a meeting of the council's cabinet today, members also voted to remove the permitted development rights on the airfield with immediate effect.

    Kurtley Beale scored a try with his first touch before receiving a yellow card on his Wasps debut as his side beat Connacht in the European Champions Cup to go top of Pool Two.  

    Australia international Beale agreed to join Wasps on 13 May, but suffered a serious knee injury less than a day later which delayed his debut for his new club.

    The last Peugeot to be made at the company's Coventry plant rolled off the production line 10 years ago - here's a reminder of some of the key features of the city's car-making heritage...

    • In 1950 there were 12 manufacturers - Alvis, Armstrong Siddeley, Daimler, Hillman, Humber, Jaguar, Lanchester, Lea-Francis, Singer, Standard, Sunbeam-Talbot and Triumph. The UK had the world's second largest car-making industry, producing 372,370 vehicles between 1962 and 1964, and was the world's leading car exporter
    • Between 1959 and 1963 weekly earnings in the car industry in Coventry were 24% higher than the national industrial average.
    • Women formed 37.9% of the workforce compared to 30.8% in the rest of the UK.

  7. Ministers consider council tax rise to cover social care fundingpublished at 12:31 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    The prime minister is understood to be considering plans to allow councils in England to increase council tax to fund the social care system.

    It follows warnings that the system could "topple at any moment" leading to pressure on the NHS if patients cannot be released from hospital.

    Leader of Warwickshire County Council Izzi Seccombe, who is also the chairman of the Local Government Association's community well-being board, told  BBC Radio 4's Today programme that increasing the precept "would not plug" any funding gap.

    She said the £383m raised from a previous 2% precept was eclipsed by larger costs, such as the £600m cost of the national living wage increase.

    The A45 is closed southbound between the B4429 Daventry Road Dunchurch and M45 Dunchurch junction.

    Police are at the scene directing traffic after a coach overturned earlier.

  12. Have a Pikachu at statue's latest makeoverpublished at 10:43 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    The statue in the middle of Dunchurch has had its annual makeover.

    @MannyC tweeted , externala picture of it in the guise of Pikachu - the cuddly Pokemon.  

    Locals have been dressing up the monument since the 1970s.

    Past years have seen the statue of Lord John Scott dressed as Mr Blobby, a Star Wars stormtrooper and Noddy.

  15. A45 coach crash: Passengers cut freepublished at 09:29 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Passengers on a coach which overturned on the A45 had to be rescued via the roof, the fire service said.

    They used a winch and ladder as well as a thermal image camera to free the 17 passengers and one driver from the coach, on its side off the roadway.

    The service still has one crew at the scene.

    One person's been taken to hospital following a coach crash on the A45, the ambulance service says.

    Of the 18 passengers, two were treated at the scene and discharged and one was taken to hospital suffering back pain.

    The fire service said it was called at about 06:30 to the coach on its side.

    A collision involving a coach carrying passengers has closed the A45 Daventry Road from Manor Farm into Dunchurch.

    Police say they believe no-one has been seriously injured.

    The road is expected to be closed for some time.
