  4. Children's centre support 'made me feel normal again'published at 17:50 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Kate Cooper was among several mums carrying babies to a protest against proposed closures of children's centres across Warwickshire.

    Ms Cooper (pictured left) said a Warwick centre had been an invaluable source of support following the birth of her second child.

    "I was finding it really difficult," she said. "I wasn't really going out."

    Then she saw a letter about services at Westgate Children's Centre.

    Ms Cooper has since been taking both her sons to a weekly "Tiny Treasures" session.

    "Talking to people in the same boat just made me feel normal again for the first time in many weeks."

    Her friend Laura Humphries (centre) praised the work and commitment of support staff and services such as free counselling and the regular dads' group.

    Warwickshire County Council has begun a public consultation exercise, external on "remodelling" its children's centres. Under proposals, 27 in a total of 39 would close.

  7. Coventry teen arrested on suspicion of terror offencespublished at 17:25 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    An 18-year-old Coventry woman has been arrested today on suspicion of terrorism offences, West Midlands Police says.

    According to the force, she was arrested "on suspicion of being concerned in the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism".

    A spokesperson said the arrest was pre-planned and intelligence-led and there was no risk to the public.

    She is being questioned by West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit at a police station in the West Midlands.

    Just after midnight they are expected to turn into scattered thunderstorms, with intense downpours affecting the whole region.

    In both cases the Met Office says there is a chance of localised flooding.

    Resident groups and campaigners in the north Warwickshire village of Austrey say they're relieved by the announcement HS2 won't be cutting through the area.

    The high speed rail link was due to cross Appleby Hill, but the route announced by HS2 Ltd now shows the line moving away from the village.

    North Warwickshire MP Craig Tracey (pictured), who has voted against the project, described it as "very positive news for residents in the village".

    The MP for Coventry South says the government is not doing enough to ease youth unemployment.

    Labour's Jim Cunningham said cuts to further education budgets in Coventry and cities like it were not helping.

    "How does the minister expect to reduce youth unemployment when they've cut the further education budgets across the country and particularly in Coventry, which has been cut by 27%?" he said in Parliament.

    The treasury minister Stephen Barclay said "record numbers" were going to university.

  13. Bicycle theft and vehicle crime top for offences unsolved by West Mids forcepublished at 13:40 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Most vehicle crimes investigated by West Midlands Police go unsolved, according to BBC research.

    The BBC has analysed 18 million crimes over a five-year period across 43 police forces, gauging which type of offence had the highest rates of no suspects being identified.

    The analysis focused on cases that were closed because of that outcome.

    In two types of offence, the West Midlands force performed more poorly than any other English and Welsh force - bicycle theft and vehicle crime.

    No suspects were identified in, respectively, 93% and 85% of cases.
