    A racing pigeon spotted in a school corridor was set free by staff, only for it to return the next day and peck on the window.

    The bird at Whoberley Hall Primary School in Coventry has since been nicknamed Percy and is a hit with the pupils.

    Its overseas owner has been identified and a collection is due.

    In the meantime, pupils are looking after their feathered friend.

  2. Protesters gather over cuts to children's centrespublished at 11:55 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Protesters have gathered outside Shire Hall to highlight plans to close 27 of Warwickshire's 39 children's centres.

    Petitions against the plans that would see the 12 remaining sites become "family hubs" have attracted about 3,000 signatures.

    Councillors will discuss the plans at a meeting today.

    The man who died following an "altercation" in Nuneaton has been named as Peter Spiers who was from the town.

    The 66 year old died on Saturday in Market Place, police say.

    A post mortem carried out yesterday was inconclusive.

    A 46-year-old man, arrested on suspicion of murder, has been bailed while investigations continue.

  5. NSPCC issues warning over home-alone kidspublished at 10:58 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    The NSPCC has referred to police and children's services in Coventry 66 cases of children being left home alone, according to its latest figures.

    The children's charity said specialist counsellors manning its 24-hour helpline made the referrals last year, up from 38 in 2015/16.

    The NSPCC says leaving children at home without adult supervision puts them at greater risk of accident or injury.

    The charity offers this advice, external for parents.

    A rabbit and her five babies are recovering after being rescued from a building site in Warwickshire.

    Builders called the RSPCA to pick up the animals from a site in Church Walk, Atherstone, on Monday 10 July.

    RSPCA officer Cara Gibbon said: "The mum had managed to bury herself underneath some woodwork which was part of a structure of a new house. As soon as I saw her I could also make out her tiny babies. They are adorable."

    She added: "There is a chance that the rabbit is an escaped pet and we would love to reunite her with her family, if so."

  7. College pays tribute to students killed in Atherstone crashpublished at 09:55 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Two of the teenagers killed in a car crash near Atherstone on Sunday have been named by their college as Ryan Barber and Trudi-Mae Kennell.

    A statement issued by North Warwickshire and South Leicestershire College confirmed they studied at the Nuneaton campus - Ryan as an apprentice on day release and Trudi-Mae a student of sport and exercise science.

    Marion Plant, principal, described Trudi-Mae as a "lovely girl" and "model student" and said: "She was always smiling and will be very much missed."

    Of Ryan, she said: "Like Trudi-Mae he was very popular."

    The college has opened a book of condolence.

    A third teenager died when the car in which they were travelling hit a tree on Sunday afternoon, with a fourth occupant left with injuries thought to be non life-threatening.

    Coventry wheelchair racer Kare Adenegan has won a bronze medal in the T34 800m at the World Para-athletics Championships.

    It follows her success in the 100m on Friday.

    Teammate Hannah Cockroft was first in the T34 800m and can complete a treble with victory in the 400m.

  9. Vigil to remember three killed in Atherstone crashpublished at 08:36 British Summer Time 18 July 2017

    Police closed a road in Atherstone last night to allow family and friends of three people killed in a car crash to hold a vigil.

    A total of four people were in a BMW car driving in The Common in Baxterley when it hit a tree on Sunday afternoon.

    Two men, aged 18 and 19, and an 18-year-old woman died and a fourth passenger suffered injuries which are not thought to be life-threatening.

    A woman has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

    Motorists in Leamington Spa are being warned to expect delays as seven weeks of roadworks begin today on one of the town's main streets - to renew old gas mains.

    The ageing iron pipes in Regent Street are being replaced by ones made from a plastic, said to last eighty years.

    The road will stay open, but there'll be temporary traffic lights at the junction with Portland Street. The junction with Bedford Street will be closed.

    The BBC has learned that since 2014, councils across the West Midlands have spent more than £900,000 on legal costs and clean-up operations associated with travellers' illegal camps.

    Local authorities are trying to preserve public spaces while traveller groups are demanding they do more to provide permanent pitches.

    To celebrate the 75th anniversary of Kineton munition depot, soldiers and officers will conduct a freedom parade in Warwick on 22 July.

    Town honours bomb disposal troops in 2012

    Troops from the Warwickshire army base that trains bomb disposal experts were given the freedom of Warwick in 2012.

    DEMSS Kineton is the largest munitions depot in Europe and trains up to 600 bomb disposal experts each year.

    The parade will begin at 10:00 from Warwick Castle and end at Pageant Gardens.

    Sky Blues defender Cian Harris has joined Premier league side Swansea City for an undisclosed fee, the club said.

    The 20-year-old academy graduate made 17 appearances for Coventry City.
