    Here's a reminder that the A686 over the Hartside pass, between Penrith and Alston, is closed all week between Gamblesby and the Renwick turn, for resurfacing.

    And the roadworks at the A69 junction with eastern way, on the Warwick Road into Carlisle, have stepped up with temporary traffic lights at the Eastern Way junction.

    A weather front will continue to introduce thicker cloud and outbreaks of rain across parts of Cumbria.

    The winds will strengthen through the day, and blustery conditions are likely this afternoon, but it'll feel milder with highs of around 15 to 18°C (59 to 64°F).

    A weather warning for strong winds, external come into force at 06:00 tomorrow morning, forecasting gusts to 60mph.

    Heavy rain associated with Storm Helene will move in from the southwest later in the night, along with strong winds. Lowest temperatures will be from 10C to 13C (50F to 55F).

    Tributes have been coming in through the day to Kevin Beattie, the Carlisle-born football star who died at the age of 64 at the weekend.

    There are only 20 beds in the whole of England for men who need specialist support because of domestic violence, according to a Cumbria-based expert.

    Figures obtained as part of an Inside Out BBC investigation show the police received more than 1,600 reports of domestic abuse against men last year.

    Dr Liz Bates (pictured), an expert from the University of Cumbria, says they have no access to any "safe space".

  9. Council warns dog walkers after bogus warden issues finepublished at 17:20 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Copeland Council is warning dog walkers to beware after a bogus official issued a fraudulent "fine" to a dog walker.

    A man walking on North Shore was approached by someone claiming to be from the council and fined £15 on the spot for not having his dog on a lead.

    The dog walker paid the money but the man was not actually from the council, which says penalties are issued in writing and all their enforcement staff wear ID.

    Direct flights between China and Manchester have helped almost triple the number of Chinese tourists on attractions such as the Windermere Lake Criuises, according to a new report.

    A report compiled for Manchester Airport says the company, which runs historic ships and waterbuses on Windermere, had seen a 286% increase in Chinese tour bookings in the past two years and a local hotel chain had seen an 85% increase in visitors.

    In 2017 there were 58,000 visits from China across the North West, according to the report by independent consultants Steer Davis Gleave.

  11. Engineers investigate damage to Cockermouth water mainpublished at 16:47 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    United Utilities engineers say parts of Cockermouth have lost water supplies because a "third party" damaged a water main on Back Lane in the town.

    Earlier three schools closed for the day while repairs are made.

    United Utilities said: "We’re investigating how the pipe was damaged and our engineers will be working this afternoon to repair it.

    “Everything should be back to normal this afternoon.”

  12. Woman taken to hospital after kitchen firepublished at 16:09 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    A 94-year-old woman from Barrow was taken to hospital after a kitchen fire at her home.

    The emergency services were called to Whitehead Street to what they described as a small fire. The woman was given oxygen before ambulance paramedics took her to hospital.

    It's understood her condition is not serious.

  13. Thieves 'blow up' cash machine at Cumbrian storepublished at 15:41 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Criminals trying to get money out of a cash machine in Kirkby Stephen pumped explosive gas into the front of the ATM and then ignited it, police say.

    Officers say some of the money will have been scorched by the blast early on Saturday and they have asked shopkeepers to watch for blackened notes.

    Det Sgt Matthew Belshaw said the technique was "dangerous and unpredictable".

    He said criminals planning such an attack often hid the gas cylinder nearby beforehand or dumped it close to the scene of the crime afterwards.

  15. Drugs courier jailed after police find £700,000 in car bootpublished at 14:52 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    A drugs courier caught on the M6 near Carlisle with cannabis and amphetamine valued by police at more than £700,000 has been jailed for three years at Carlisle Crown Court.

    John Read, 51, of Bellmore Street, Garston, Liverpool, was driving north in an uninsured Vauxhall when he was pulled over in July.

    Read, whose life was said to have "spiralled out of control" after the death of his son, was to be paid £1,000 for the trip.

    He admitted possessing the drugs with intent to supply and driving without insurance.

  16. Views sought on £5m roundabout planpublished at 14:33 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    People living in Ulverston have a chance this week to meet Highways England staff about plans to build a new roundabout on the A590.

    The roundabout would be on a stretch of the road that is used by about 20,000 vehicles a day, with new housing developments likely to take place in the area.

    There will be a drop-in event on Thursday at the Memorial Hall in Swathmoor where drivers and residents will be able to find out more about the £5m scheme.

  17. Police renew appeal over Botchergate crashpublished at 14:07 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Police have put out a new appeal for witnesses as they investigate a crash in Botchergate, Carlisle, at the weekend, which left a number of pedestrians with injuries.

    The collision, at about 19:00 on Saturday night, involved a taxi and a black Ford Fiesta outside the Rambler pub in the heart of the city's main nightlife area.

    Police say a man in his 20s from Whitehaven suffered serious head and back injuries and was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary at Newcastle and five other people were hurt.

    Officers said they want to hear from anyone who saw what happened but has not yet been interviewed.

  18. Four schools closed as water supply failspublished at 13:38 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    Four schools, three of them in the Cockermouth area, have closed for the day because their water supply has failed.

    All Saints and Bridekirk primaries and Cockermouth's comprehensive have all sent students home but expect to reopen tomorrow.

    Mayfield School in Whitehaven has also closed, saying it has no water supply, but it is not clear whether this is connected.

    Bridekirk school said its problems were because of a burst water main in the area.

    We have asked United Utilities for more details of the area affected and we will let you know when they tell us.

  19. Second storm warning hoisted for countypublished at 13:18 British Summer Time 17 September 2018

    A second yellow weather warning has been issued for Cumbria, with the remnants of Hurricane Helene brushing across the county tonight and a more powerful storm arriving on Wednesday.

    Meterologists now say the first storm will not give the county quite the battering first expected, external, with the strongest gusts only between 40mph and 50mph.

    But it will last longer than earlier forecast, from 21:00 this evening through until 18:00 tomorrow.

    The current forecast for Wednesday, external says winds could gust to 60mph between 06:00 and 22:00.
