    The party has won 37 seats (of 48), compared with five for both the Conservatives and Independents and one Liberal Democrat.

    The final count is in and the Conservatives have retained control of Newark and Sherwood District Council.

    According to figures from the council website, they have gained three seats and Labour has lost five.

    Despite some upset by independents, who took all three seats from the Conservatives in the Leake ward, the Conservatives have held the authority.

    They only beat Labour's candidate in Bingham West by 30 votes, and lost two seats to them in the Ruddington ward.

    The Conservatives now need just two more seats to retain control at Rushcliffe Council.

    In the past few minutes Frances Purdue-Horan and John Stockwood kept their seats in Bingham West.

    The Lib Dems were boosted by a gain in Bingham East, where 21-year-old Lizzie Howitt took one of the two seats which has been vacated by Independent councillors.

    While out canvasing Ms Howitt said she discovered a lot of people were "upset" with the stance major parties were taking on Brexit.

    She said: "People bring up that the major parties have issues - they bring up the fact the Conservatives are awful with Brexit and the same with Labour so you have to mention national issues.

    "You also have to bring up the importance of local issues - things like the availability of housing are also really important."

    Whilst many areas have seen slightly lower than average turnout with few reaching more than half, Lady Bay in Rushcliffe has bucked the trend.

    In that ward 54% showed up to cast their vote.

    Nationally, turnout is averaging one or two points below the last two local elections.

    The Lib Dems have gained a seat from Labour in the Phoenix ward of Gedling Borough Council.

    It means both seats in the ward are now Lib Dem - Andrew Ellwood & newly elected Clive Towsey-Hinton.

    Overall Labour has enough seats to hold the council.

    Two independent councillors have also just taken seats from the Conservatives in Calverton.

    The Conservatives have comfortably retained control of the Radcliffe on Trent ward in Rushcliffe.

    Three seats were up for grabs, with former council leader Neil Clarke polling 1,167 votes.

    Roger Upton got 1,416 votes and Abby Johnson-Brennan collected 1,253.

    The greens came in second place with Helga Wills getting 763 votes, well ahead of Labour’s Paul Baron on 617.

    He put himself forward as an independent candidate so the ward would be contested and said he does not think party politics has a place in such a small unitary council as Rutland.

    The Liberal Democrats have won their first seat on Rushcliffe Council.

    Lizzi Howitt was one of two councillors elected to serve Bingham East.

    Conservative Gareth Tyson won the other seat. The ward was up for grabs after two independent incumbents stood down.
