I think the water is moving faster now that it was a couple of hours ago.

It's really shooting underneath Exeter Bridge and you can't see the weir at all.

As I look across at the river towards the bus station, it's just a fast-moving torrent of water. It's a very different scene to what people would usually see in the city centre.

    Neil Heath
    BBC News Online

The RSPCA are seeking to reassure the public after pictures emerged of horses standing in waterlogged fields north of Derby.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC the foals were "stranded" in flood water, close to the River Derwent near the A38 Little Eaton island.

Worried members of the public feared they could drown overnight.

However, the animal charity said they don't believe the horses are in danger.

A spokeswoman said: "The field is very large but the native-type ponies have a tendency to congregate close to the road where the water is deeper, so we understand why it might seem that they are stuck in a flooded field when this is not the case.

"There are many acres which include higher and drier ground that the ponies can access."

  16. Derby city centre evacuations being consideredpublished at 17:02 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    Chris Doidge
    BBC Radio Derby, political reporter

I've been speaking to officials who have said they are considering commercial and residential evacuations in some small parts of Derby city centre. They're concerned about the flood defences.

In the Exeter Arms/Darwin Place area, the flood wall seems to be leaking a little bit but, regardless of that, the water is going round it anyway.

There are some residential and commercial properties around there that, if the water level rises - and the Environment Agency says it probably is going to rise more in the next three to four hours, then there are some properties the council is starting to worry about.
