  2. Flooding risk sees Derby bus station evacuatedpublished at 16:08 Greenwich Mean Time 8 November 2019

    Derby's bus station is currently being evacuated as the city's stretch of the River Derwent is expected to reach its highest levels since 2000.

    The city council said the Eastgate underpass is now closed and travellers should contact their bus provider for travel updates.

    Earlier East Midlands Railway announced there were no services running between Derby and Matlock, and no bus replacement services were being run due to the floods.

    The A1 in Nottinghamshire is now fully re-open after it was closed due to flooding.

    It was shut northbound between the B6325 near North Muskham and the B1164 near Tuxford.

    Highways England said there are still delays and people are advised to re-route or put off their journeys.

    Water levels along Derby's stretch of the River Derwent are expected to reach record levels, with the government's flood information service expecting the river to peak at 7pm.

    If it does, it will be the highest the river level has been since 2000 when it reached 3.21m.

    Derby City Council has already closed the footpath opposite Darwin Place car park due to its proximity to rising water levels.

    BBC Radio Derby political reporter Chris Doidge added he feels "concern is growing in Derby about some of the flood defences", and council workers have been told to go home if their vehicle is at risk.

    The Environment Agency is advising people from the East Midlands to check for possible flood risks, as light rain is forecast over the weekend.

    A spokeswoman advised people to be cautious because "the ground is saturated and the river levels are high".

    She added: "We advise people to stay away from swollen rivers and not to walk or drive through flood water, as just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car.”

    Staff have been moving collections to the upper floors of Derby's Silk Mill museum, in case the building is flooded.

    The museum, in the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, is currently closed while it undergoes a major redevelopment programme.

    The undercroft of the Silk Mill has already flooded.

    Tony Butler, the executive director of Derby Museums, said: "We hope the ground floor can stay dry."

    Homes and businesses in some areas of Derby are "expected" to flood later, the city council has said.

    The River Derwent in the city centre has risen to 2.8m from under 1m earlier in the week.

    It is expected to rise to 3.23m at 7pm.

    This video shows how far water levels have risen on the River Derwent as it passes through Derby city centre near the Council House.

    The city council said flood defences had been activated to try to channel water through as freely as possible.

    Levels are currently forecast by the Environment Agency to peak at about 17:00.

    Residents from 28 properties in Mansfield have been told it's still not safe to return home, external following a mudslip yesterday.

    The emergency evacuation was ordered after part of a cliff gave way at Berry Hill Quarry shortly before 17:00.

    The district council said emergency accommodation was provided for a family of four and three couples. Other residents stayed with friends and relatives.

    The authority said a surveying team had gone to the scene today to "establish site integrity and assess the damage to the cliff face and properties".

    Residents have been briefly allowed back to their homes to retrieve essential items and the council said it would let them know when it was safe for them to return properly.

    Hayley Barsby, chief executive of Mansfield District Council, said: "Our main priority is the safety of the public and we are working with specialist agencies to determine the best way forward and undertake any emergency works."

    Alongside a slew of road closures across the East Midlands, rail services have also been affected by flooding.

    While trains are back up and running on East Midlands Railway's Nottingham/Mansfield/Worksop route, the company said trains serving its London to Sheffield route, and its Matlock to Nottingham route, have been disrupted.

    Mark Hopkinson witnessed the emergency operation to find a woman whose body was pulled from flood water in Darley Dale when he arrived at work this morning.

    He told BBC Radio Derby: "There was a police helicopter flying up and down this area as though they were looking for somebody or something.

    "We didn't know whether they were just checking the water levels or the extent of the flooding.

    "Then police vehicles started turning up and we learned they were looking for a missing person.

    "They had people on the ground looking, and mountain rescuers. We saw a little drone go up and the coastguard helicopter came, and that was then circling, hovering over some trees."

    Some have said it hasn't been like this in more than 20 years, while others say they have never seen water levels so high.

    The downstairs of the Square and Compass pub in Darley Dale is submerged in water.

    The water was up to the waist of Simon Cowley, who runs the pub with his wife Mary, last night.

    He said "within five or 10 minutes, we had 3ft in the pub".

    Mr Cowley said they raised belongings off the floor, then "came upstairs and watched it overnight".

    Their son Sam said he stayed at his grandparents' house last night and hasn't been able to get home.
