  7. East Midlands 'ignored' over emergency courtspublished at 11:05 British Summer Time 22 July 2020

    Neil Heath
    BBC News Online

The East Midlands has been "ignored", the region's police and crime commissioners have claimed, because the area missed out on getting an emergency "Nightingale court" to help clear a backlog in cases.

Ten areas in England and Wales will get the temporary courts to ensure the "wheels of justice keep turning".

However, despite outstanding court cases in the East Midlands "rocketing", no such courts will be set up in the area.

Lord Willy Bach, Leicestershire PCC and Chair of the East Midlands Criminal Justice Board, said it was "absolutely astonishing" the region was overlooked.

He said vulnerable victims are being denied justice simply because of "where they live".

"The pandemic has exacerbated an existing crisis and it will take much more than 10 extra courts to undo the damage," he added.

There are about 1,800 cases waiting to be heard at crown courts in Derby, Leicester and Nottingham.

There are also about 24,000 outstanding cases at the region's magistrates' courts.

A HM Courts and Tribunals Service spokesperson said work was ongoing to identify more potential locations as part of its wider courts recovery plans.

  16. East Midlands 'ignored completely' over court backlogpublished at 17:08 British Summer Time 21 July 2020

    Liam Barnes
    BBC News

Courts in the East Midlands aren't being given enough help to clear a backlog of cases made worse by the coronavirus crisis, the region's police and crime commissioners (PCCs) have said.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has announced 10 new temporary courts will be created to help clear a queue of hearings, but none of them will be in Derbyshire, Leicestershire or Nottinghamshire.

Lord Willy Bach, PCC for Leicestershire and chairman of the East Midlands Criminal Justice Board, said it was "absolutely astonishing" the region had been "ignored completely", adding the pandemic "has exacerbated an existing crisis" in the wider court system.

The MoJ said there was "ongoing work to identify more potential locations" for additional temporary courts.

    Kit Sandeman
    Local Democracy Reporter

More than 150 jobs are set to be cut by Nottingham City Council as it deals with the economic cost of coronavirus.

A total of 154 jobs are set to go, with the authority saying voluntary redundancies, a recruitment freeze and deleting vacant posts will be used where possible in place of compulsory redundancies.

About £12.5m in cuts have been proposed today, but a further £51m in savings will have to be found before April unless further government support is made available.

The authority estimates the economic cost of coronavirus - both from increased demand for services and decreased income from the likes of car parking, leisure centres and commercial property ownership - will be £87.9m by April next year.

In an outline of potential cuts, which will be subject to consultation, one day centre for people with disabilities and some "underused" play areas are due to close.

A charge of £25 for households requesting a third residents parking permit could also be introduced.
