A man who police said held his six-month-old baby by the neck while assaulting his ex-girlfriend has been jailed.

Nottinghamshire Police said Billy Moran, 30, entered his ex-partner's house demanding to see his son after she refused to speak to him while he was heavily intoxicated on 10 July.

He picked up his son as he was assaulting his ex-partner but she managed to poke him in the eye and the baby fell with Moran catching him by the neck, officers said.

While the baby was in that position, police said Moran grabbed his ex-partner by the hair and swung her around the room in the presence of his former girlfriend's friend, resulting in all three falling over.

After all three fell over, the friend managed to take the baby.

Neighbours then attempted to restrain him but he continued to assault the victim, grabbing a knife and trying to stab her, the force said.

Moran, of Albert Avenue, Balderton, Newark, admitted actual bodily harm and was sentenced to 20 months in prison and was given a four-year restraining order against his ex-partner and child at a hearing on 3 August.

Det Con Janet Percival said: "This was a horrifying ordeal for our victim and it's very fortunate that no-one was seriously injured due to Moran’s behaviour."

But last month it was hit by a van, leaving the gnome reportedly feeling "flat".

Now a local gardening company has re-erected the stump for free while the multinational e-commerce company has also chipped in.

Geraldine Ellis, who looks after the house, said there has been "a lovely end to the story".

"As compensation", Amazon (the company) has donated 20 basic mobile phones to West Bridgford-based homelessness charity the Friary to help homeless people keep in contact.
