  12. Covid: NHS trust boss urges BAME vaccine uptakepublished at 18:50 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Liam Barnes
    BBC News

The chief executive of a hospital trust has said he is "concerned" about the level of Covid-19 vaccinations among BAME communities.

Gavin Boyle, of University Hospitals Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, said he's been "delighted" with community leaders' efforts to promote the vaccines on offer, with 83% of the trust's BAME staff now having received a first dose.

He said all of the trust's staff who deal with patients have received their first dose, with nine in 10 of all staff getting a jab.

Mr Boyle said a fall in the number of Covid patients being treated at the trust's hospitals in recent weeks has been "a welcome relief", but said dealing with the backlog of routine procedures will be "one of the big challenges we will inevitably face".

    Gavin Bevis
    BBC News

Rutland continues to have the highest infection rate in England, although the figure has fallen slightly.

The county had a rate of 448.3 cases per 100,000 people for the week to 8 February - down from 465.9.

An outbreak at HMP Stocken is thought to be behind the high numbers.

Mansfield, Ashfield and Leicester also feature in the top 20 England areas with the highest rate, but Nottingham has dropped out.

The England average is 176.9 - a slight drop from yesterday's figure.

  14. Pub gets new name due to 'racist connotation' fearspublished at 17:00 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Amy Woodfield
    BBC News

A new name has been chosen for a pub in Wirksworth as part of a strategy to remove any "racist connotations".

The Blacks Head on West End will now be called The Quarryman following a public vote.

Greene King said the name reflects the area's historical connections with limestone quarrying and lead mining.

"Calling the pub The Quarryman would mark this important piece of history for the area," said the brewery.

Other names on the shortlist were The Gilkin and The Market Tavern.

The pub is one of four in England being renamed by the brewery.

The three others, in Bury St Edmunds, Shinfield and Sudbury, are called The Black Boy.

Wayne Shurvinton, Greene King Pub Partners managing director, said: “Despite the obscure origins of the pubs’ previous names, from the research we carried out it was clear there was a perception today that the old names were linked with racism, which is why we knew we had to take this step if we wanted to continue on our journey to become a truly anti-racist organisation."

The woman got into a white Audi in Hazel Street and was attacked by a man at about 01:30 on 6 February, officers said.

  19. More than 180,000 in Nottinghamshire receive vaccinepublished at 14:23 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

More than 180,000 people in Nottinghamshire have received the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine, one of the county's most senior clinicians has said.

Medical director for Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Dr Andrew Haynes said the county was delivering about 50,000 vaccination doses a week.

He said that more than 90% of residents in care homes, and the over 75s, had received their first jab.

    Mansfield vaccination centre

People aged between 70-74, and the clinically vulnerable, are now receiving the first doses of the vaccine in Nottinghamshire.

Those aged between 65-69 are now being contacted about booking appointments to receive the vaccine.

Dr Haynes said: "All 11 of our vaccination sites are now working 12 hours a day, seven days a week."

But the medical director warned that hospitals were still very busy, and more than 600 hospital beds in the county, about a quarter of overall capacity, were currently occupied by Covid patients.

He said that although Nottingham has now passed its peak for admissions, "the number of beds occupied is falling a bit slower than we would like".

  20. Infection rates remain high across Nottinghamshirepublished at 14:06 Greenwich Mean Time 12 February 2021

    Alex Regan
    BBC News

Covid-19 infection rates across Nottinghamshire remain at a high level, the county's head of public health has said.

At a county-wide coronavirus briefing, Jonathan Gribbin said across the East Midlands 233 people per 100,000 tested positive for Covid-19 over a seven-day period.

Although this is slightly higher than the national average, infection rates across Nottinghamshire were significantly higher.

    Nottingham City Hall

Mansfield has the highest infection rate at 348 people per 100,000.

Ashfield has 304 infections per 100,000, and Bassetlaw has 254 .

Mr Gribbin said it appeared drops in infection were "levelling off" and urged people to "keep going with the lockdown measures".

Nottingham's head of public health Alison Challenger said the city's infection rate had reduced slightly to 305.2 people per 100,000, which is significantly higher than the national average of 194 people per 100,000.

She said the county remained in the top 20 for infection rates and asked the public to continue following Covid-19 guidance.

She also suggested residents consider taking asymptomatic Covid tests.

"For people who can't work from home, that's something they should really consider," she said.
