Garry McBride, of Monumental Icons in Quarndon, said it was important for Captain Sir Tom's fundraising efforts not to be forgotten.

Captain Sir Tom raised almost £33m by walking 100 laps of his Bedfordshire garden to mark his 100th birthday during the first coronavirus lockdown.

"He was a beacon of light in our darkest times and I think he'll be missed by a lot of people," Mr McBride told the PA news agency.

"He's now become... a champion for the great British spirit really - and because he's so well-known now throughout the world, wouldn't it be wonderful for tourists coming to London, and ourselves, to pay homage to the hard work of the NHS?"

Witnesses reported seeing the car in the water near Hoveringham on 1 February but the vehicle has not yet been recovered.

Nottinghamshire Police said an object, possibly a vehicle, had been located but difficult weather conditions were preventing crews from getting to it so sonar equipment and an underwater camera were being used, external.

Insp Heather Sutton added: "Sadly there isn't much change since last week, with heavy rainfall and now snow not helping our search operation.

"The river is continuing to run very high and fast and visibility is low, but we are continuing our efforts to recover the object from the river.

"There are not expected to be any further developments over the coming days due the adverse weather conditions."
