  6. Fatal crash motorist 'had taken drugs and was driving too fast'published at 15:44 Greenwich Mean Time 10 February 2021

A driver who crashed into a tree, killing himself and his passenger, had been travelling at “excessive speed”, and had cocaine and cannabis in his system, an inquest heard.

Brett Rogers, 37, of Derby, and Tanya Jackson, 29, of Stapleford, died on the Derby-bound carriageway of the A52 near Long Eaton on 22 August last year.

Another motorist told Derby Coroner's Court he had been driving at between 65 and 70mph when Mr Rogers passed him at a faster speed.

He described how the Vauxhall Insignia lost control, swerved in front of him "at a 45-degree angle", hit a tree and was "thrown so high in the air".

A toxicology report found evidence of cocaine in Mr Rogers' system, and levels of cannabis four times the legal limit for driving in England and Wales.

Det Con Diane McDermott, from Derbyshire Police, said the evidence showed the cannabis had recently been smoked "but could not comment on the impact" of it, and the cocaine was probably taken "the day or night before".

The hearing was told the road was wet and there had been several heavy downpours when the crash happened at about 17:00.

Concluding the inquest, Assistant Coroner Louise Pinder said Mr Rogers "had taken illicit drugs and was driving too fast for the road conditions".

She added that he and Ms Jackson both sustained fatal head injuries after Mr Rogers "lost control of the car he was driving which then collided with a tree".

This picture of a mountain hare, taken by a Derbyshire photographer, has been "highly commended" in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest.

Andy Parkinson, from Crich, took the wintry portrait of the animal, curled up in a ball in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park in 2019.

It was one of 25 images chosen by a public vote out of 49,000 submissions to the competition run by the Natural History Museum.

Mr Parkinson said he spent five or six hours lying next to the hare to get the right shot and doing press ups intermittently to keep warm.

"It's a hare I have, bizarrely, known for about four years," he told BBC Breakfast.

"I go up every year to spend a significant amount of time photographing this highly threatened species - one of our true native icons.

"This image really represents the perfect conditions I look for. We had high winds, a fresh dump of snow and incredibly cold temperatures which creates these quite compelling conditions in the backdrop."

He has been sticking to photographing locally more recently but said he is looking forward to travelling to Scotland when he can.

  17. Woman fined for double breach of Covid rulespublished at 17:23 Greenwich Mean Time 9 February 2021

    BBC News Online

A woman broke coronavirus restrictions for a second time, shortly after being issued with a fixed penalty notice for meeting up with friends, a court has heard.

At Nottingham Magistrates' Court, Edyta Ostrowska admitted participating in a gathering of two or more people in a tier three area in residential accommodation at the Newcastle Arms pub in Worksop.

The court heard police were called to the property in the early hours of Christmas Eve and found two people who didn't live there - Ms Ostrowska and a man - drinking and smoking with the four residents.

The pair were told to go home and issued with fixed penalty notices but when officers were called back an hour or so later, Ms Ostrowska was found with a drink in her hand and arrested.

Defending herself, the 47-year-old, of Carlton Road in Worksop, said she had returned to pick up her phone and had only been there "between three and five minutes when the police arrived".

    Nottingham Magistrates' Court

Magistrate Richard Vincent said: "It does not matter it was Christmas Eve and your friends had invited you, it was against the law and we consider it a blatant breach of the warning and of the penalty notice you had been given.

"We would be failing as magistrates to wider society if we did not consider this seriously."

She was fined £320 and ordered to pay a £34 victim surcharge.
