    Police have arrested a man on suspicion of drugs offences after a car crashed into a telegraph pole during an attempt to evade police.

    Officers on patrol in Dronfield, Derbyshire, said the 4x4 driver "sped off" after seeing them.

    He then tried to escape the vehicle, "leaving behind his injured girlfriend", officers said on Twitter, external.

    Over £1,300 and suspected Class A drugs were found at the scene. and a 29-year-old man from Sheffield was arrested.

    The driver and his girlfriend, who is also in her 20s, were taken to hospital for treatment for injuries not thought to be life changing or threatening.

    A man has been arrested after paramedics were assaulted by a patient being transported to hospital.

    Police were called to Leicester Royal Infirmary just before 21:00 on Tuesday following reports of a patient "behaving aggressively".

    A 33-year-old man from Wigston was arrested on suspicion of assault.

    A spokesperson for Leicester’s hospitals said: “We cannot accept violence of any form against our hard working staff we are co-operating fully with police on this matter".

    The medical director of Nottingham's QMC and City hospitals says the number of Covid patients being treated is beginning to fall but serious pressures still remain.

    Keith Girling said: "There's early indications, certainly in patient numbers, that we are seeing a reduction in the numbers.

    Rutland has retained its position as the area in England with the highest coronavirus infection rate.

    The latest figures show it had a rate of 465.9 cases per 100,000 people in the week to 7 February.

    The surge has been attributed to an outbreak at HMP Stocken.

    Tunnels on the Monsal Trail in Derbyshire have been closed to the public over fears huge icicles hanging from the ceiling could injure someone.

    The Peak District National Park Authority said icy conditions on the ground was also a safety concern at the former railway tunnels.

    A man has been arrested after the death of a 32-year-old woman in Leicestershire.

    Police said they were called to a property in Elizabeth Court in Wigston at about 04:20 this morning to a report that a woman had died.

    She was pronounced dead at the scene and her death is being treated as "unexplained", with a post-mortem examination being carried out today.

    A 41-year-old man from Leicester has been arrested in connection with the incident.

    A man has denied causing the death of a student who was hit by a car in Nottingham city centre.

    William Christmas, 19, died at the scene of the crash on Derby Road during the early hours of 19 March 2020.

    Manish Shah, 38, of Barsby Drive, Loughborough, pleaded not guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and dangerous driving at Nottingham Crown Court.

    Mr Christmas, from Dorset, was a first-year student at the University of Nottingham, studying politics and international relations.

    Mr Shah was bailed and is due back at the same court on 16 April.

    A trial date has been set for 20 September.

    A driver who hit a motorcyclist "while on a hands-free call" has been sentenced.

    Natasha Labidi, 40, was driving along the A46 near Flintham, Nottinghamshire, on 11 December 2019 when she hit John Aves.

    Police said Labidi, who was found to be "engaged in a hands-free call", swerved into the outside lane but was "unable to avoid" hitting Mr Aves, who tumbled into the carriageway.

    Officers believe he may have then been hit by another car.

    Mr Aves, 42, was given first aid at the scene but died in hospital two hours later.

    Labidi, 40, of Anson Road, Newton, was found guilty of causing death by careless driving in January.

    At Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday she was disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay costs of £1,200 and a £90 victim surcharge.

    She was also sentenced to a 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work.

    In a statement, Mr Aves's family paid tribute to members of the public who tried to help him.

    It read: "The only consolation we take from that awful night is that he was not alone and was surrounded by some lovely people who cared for him to the best of their abilities and going above and beyond – including one individual travelling with him in the ambulance to the hospital.

    "For that we are thankful and will be forever grateful.”
