    Torridge District Council's portion for council tax bills is to go up by just under 5%.

    The authority said the rise meant the average B and D council tax bill would go up by about £5 as a result of its precept rise.

    However, the council said that other authorities and services, including police and fire, had already voted to increase their share.

    In a statement the council said "despite Torridge only adding £5 to the bill, our local communities will unfortunately still face increases of around £85 in their council tax this year".

  2. Eden Project to be closed for next two days due to weatherpublished at 18:29 Greenwich Mean Time 27 February 2018

    Forecasts of snow and ice mean the Eden Project will be closed for Wednesday and Thursday this week for safety reasons.

    If the forecasts turn out to be accurate, it could end up looking a bit like it did in the picture below, from 2005.

    Eden plans to be open to the public once again on Friday.

    Its statement says: "Due to forecasts of heavy snow showers, the Eden Project has decided to close to the public for the next two days.

    "This decision has been made to protect the safety of our visitors."

    Visitors are advised to check www.edenproject.com, external and social media feeds for updates.

    It will be very cold tonight, with clear periods but also the risk of a few further snow showers.

    There is a chance that these may become more frequent in the south later in the night.

    Minimum Temperature: -8 to -5C (18 to 23F).

    It will be bitterly cold and windy on Wednesday, with frequent and often heavy snow showers continuing along the south coast.

    The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow, external for Cornwall on Thursday. Heavy snow showers are expected to intensify towards the end of the week.

    Maximum temperature: -1 to 2C (30 to 36F).

    The A30 was closed in both directions after a crash between a small van and a tractor with a trailer carrying livestock just before 10:00 on the westbound carriageway.

    One of the men involved in the crash was believed to have possibly suffered life-threatening injuries, police said.

    Truro City Chairman Pete Masters has criticised tonight's would-be opponents Concord Rangers after the Essex side pulled out of their National League South tie due to the impending snowy and icy weather.

    It's the second time the fixture has been postponed after it was called off last month due to a waterlogged pitch.

    Masters (pictured) said: "The league has told Concord Rangers they have to play the game because there's no reason not to.

    "As you can see, the weather is perfect outside, our pitch is not frozen ... and the transport links from Concord down to Truro are OK at this point."

    A road in Exeter damaged by a burst water main is to remain closed until Wednesday morning, utility bosses say.

    Topsham Road is closed between Burnthouse Lane and Countess Wear due to the burst on Monday.

    South West Water said repairs to the pipe were completed on Tuesday afternoon and "reinstatement of the damaged road surface will start tonight".

    It added that freezing temperatures overnight had complicated the repairs but it was expecting "to be able to reopen the road before rush hour tomorrow morning".

    Customers' supplies are not affected and access is being maintained for residents and businesses.

    Police said drivers planning to use the road on Tuesday evening should "please make alternative plans to get home".

    A man has died after a lorry crashed into the central reservation of the A38 in Plymouth, police say.

    Emergency services were called to the Marsh Mills flyover at about 09:00 after the crash.

    Police said, external a 62-year-old man from Kingsteignton was taken to Derriford Hospital by land ambulance but was later declared dead.

    His next of kin have been informed.

    The road was closed for several hours for an investigation, as well as recovery and repair work. It has now fully reopened.

    Police have appealed for witnesses.

    A man has been arrested after a car was reported to be "driving at pedestrians", hitting one and forcing others to jump out of the way, police say.

    Falmouth Police said, external a white 2012 Toyota Yaris was seen around Swanpool area of the town at about 07:30 on Monday.

    Officers said the pedestrian struck by the vehicle "was taken to hospital with minor injuries".

    "This incident is being treated as a hit-and-run road traffic collision," officers said.

    Police have appealed for witnesses.

    A clean-up has finished of a section of the A38 in Plymouth which was the scene of a lorry crash.

    A man in his 60s from Newton Abbot was taken to hospital after a lorry crashed into the central reservation of the dual carriageway, on the Marsh Mills flyover, at about 09:00, police said.

    The road was closed for an investigation.

    Officers said the lorry had been recovered and the central reservation barrier has had a "quick temporary repair".

    The Friends of Portheras Cove have shared some pictures of impressive and "rather lovely" icicles today.

    The group said on its Facebook page, external: "They really are incredible shapes - the ridges form as the water continues to drip down them - takes your breath away."

    However, safety was also in mind, when members added: "Some are 4-5ft long. We didn't stand under them for very long ... just in case!"

    The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow and ice, external across Devon and parts of Cornwall from Thursday afternoon.

    Heavy snow showers are forecast to hit the South West on Wednesday, and are expected to intensify towards the end of the week.

    People are being warned to expect long delays on roads and public transport, as well as possible disruption to power supplies, with a build-up of snow and ice caused by plummeting temperatures and increasing easterly winds.
