    • The A30 at Monkton remains partially blocked Honiton-bound due to a broken-down lorry between Viney Lane and Hedgend Road. Approach with care
    • The A38 Haldon Hill traffic is beginning to clear Exeter-bound following an earlier incident involving a van on its roof. All lanes are now open but traffic is still slow moving on the A38 back as far as Chudleigh Knighton

  3. North Devon's CCTV service cut backpublished at 08:40 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    Cost-cutting measures to North Devon's CCTV service kick in today.

    The council had 85 cameras monitoring the area 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

    From today, the cameras will be located where they are most needed and the CCTV control room will only be manned during the hours of most need, North Devon Council said.

    The service was costing £200,000 a year to run.

    The Cornish town of Padstow is bedecked in flags, flowers and greenery to celebrate May Day.

    This morning the Blue Oss is leaving the Padstow Institute to dance with those in white and blue around the harbour.

    Then the Old Oss, followed by Padstonions bedecked in White and Red, will leave the Golden Lion Inn.

  6. Man arrested after axe incident in Holsworthypublished at 08:05 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    A man has been arrested after armed officers were called to an incident involving an axe, police say.

    Officers said, external police were to called Holsworthy at about 14:50 on Monday "following concerns for the welfare of a man" who caused criminal damage to a property.

    Armed officers were transported to the incident by police helicopter, which then took part in a search for the suspect.

    A 20-year-old man found near North Road was arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage and affray at about 18:20. He remains in custody.

    No-one was reported to have been injured.

    The National Police Air Service tweeted that, external "flying by helicopter meant the armed officers from Exeter arrived in a third of the time".

    A struggling seal pup was rescued from a Cornish beach after construction workers spotted it was in distress.

    Grace Jones, from the Cornish Seal Sanctuary, said the 16kg pup - named Bella by its rescuers - looked "exhausted" after battling with 10ft (3m) surf on Friday off Loe Bar.

    She said Bella also had "superficial wounds", a high temperature and was "missing a few claws on her front flippers".

    The team that found the pup were in the area working on a flood prevention project.

    The sanctuary said it had been a "record year" for seal pub rehabilitation, because of "exceptional weather conditions".

    It added Bella was making "slow progress", but a long way off release.

    It's the biggest day of the year in Padstow's calendar - the May Day celebrations of Obby Oss.

    Thousands of people are expected in the town to celebrate the event.

    The maypole is up and so is the bunting, and the people of Padstow are ready and raring to welcome back to the streets the red and blue oss.

    The festivities are thought to date back to the 1800s.

    There are a number of conflicting theories about the origins of the Obby Oss. Some say its roots are in pagan times, others say it's a rain-maker or a welcome to summer.

    Whatever its beginnings, generations of Padstonians from all over the world are to converge on the town.

    Thousands of people are due to attend the annual May Day celebrations in Padstow.

    The centuries-old tradition sees the Obby Oss dance through the streets of the Cornish town to welcome the coming of summer.

    About 50 firefighters were called to a blaze in a house in Exeter.

    It broke out in a second-floor bedroom in Trafalgar Road, on the Newcourt estate off Topsham Road at about 18:20 on Monday.

    Everyone inside was able to get out but further crews were dispatched because of fears it would spread to adjoining properties.

    It took crews five hours to bring the blaze under control.

    Firefighters have been monitoring temperatures within the building overnight and dampening down hotspots.

    They are due to revisit the property at 08:00 to make a final inspection, Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said, external.

  12. Devon gorse fire reached 100 sq metres at peakpublished at 07:17 British Summer Time 1 May 2018

    A gorse fire was brought under control by fire officers in Devon on Monday night.

    Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service says the fire at Woodbury Common involved about 50 sq metres of gorse when officers first arrived but the fire covered more than 100 sq metres at its peak.

    A water bowser and fire vehicles from Exmouth, Middlemoor and Sidmouth were brought in to help tackle the blaze.

    Crew finally brought the fire under control at 01:23.

    A property in Exeter was evacuated after a bedroom fire.

    Fire crews were called to Trafalgar Road at about 18:20 on Monday to tackle the "rapidly escalating" blaze.

    A spokeswoman said no-one was injured and everyone had been evacuated.

    Parts of the roof were cut away to expose the source of the flames in the second floor room.

    A 20-year-old man has been arrested after the windows of a Devon pub were smashed with an axe.

    The landlord of the Golden Fleece pub in Holsworthy said he was upstairs at the time.

    Armed police were called to the scene and a force spokesman said the man, who has not been named, was arrested about four hours after the incident, on suspicion of causing criminal damage and affray.

    The head of the Plymouth Argyle's Community Trust is to take up the position of club chief executive when current chief Martyn Starnes leaves the club at the end of May.

    The club said on its website, external that Mark Lovell would be interim CEO until a full-time successor to Starnes was appointed.

    The club said its board was "actively seeking a permanent chief executive" and the recruitment process currently under way was "progressing well and is expected to close for applications in mid-May".

    Starnes, a former CEO at Swindon Town and Yeovil Town, is moving to Bristol Rovers.

    Government minister James Brokenshire has been quizzed about three Plymouth tower blocks on his first day as communities secretary.

    Earlier this year, people living at the flats in Mount Wise (pictured) said they were disappointed and concerned work to change potentially unsafe cladding had not begun after tests last year revealed material on the outside of the buildings was similar to that of Grenfell Tower.

    A fire at the tower in London saw 71 people lose their lives.

    Great Grimsby Labour MP Melanie Onn said: "Plymouth Community Homes say that their application for funding has been turned down, and they are not alone - we've heard the same from local authorities up and down the country.

    "How many funding applications have been approved to demonstrate the government is doing all it takes?"

    Mr Brokenshire, who has returned to the cabinet following the reshuffle prompted by Amber Rudd's resignation as home secretary, said he would investigate the question and that the government was committed "in working with local councils over this important issue".

  20. Nightclub licence revoked 'over community safety concerns'published at 16:29 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    A Newquay nightclub's licence has been revoked "in the interests of community safety", Cornwall Council says.

    The council said it had "no option" after considering information from police, public health officials and licensing officers who described 31 breaches of the Eden Bar's licence over a 10-month period.

    The council's licensing committee was also told the club was within Newquay's Cumulative Impact Zone, a location that has a high level of alcohol-related injuries.

    It heard that evidence suggested the club "had not been fulfilling the responsibilities held by all premises in that area to promote public safety and minimise crime, disorder and public nuisance".

    Incidents reported included:

    • Doors being left open allowing loud music to emanate
    • An upstairs window being left open, causing a potential safety issue
    • Alcohol being carried in and out in open containers
    • Registered door staff not wearing industry identification and not keeping an up-to-date incident book
    • Allegations of underage drinking

    During the meeting, a representative for the licence holder offered to replace the designated premises supervisor and door staff.

    The club has 21 days to appeal the decision.
