  5. Three injured in A358 multiple-vehicle crashpublished at 10:50 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Three people have been injured in a multiple-vehicle road crash in east Devon, police say.

    Officers said, external a BMW 318, a Volkswagen Sirocco and a Vauxhall Zafira were involved in the crash on the A358 at Musbury, near Axminster, at about 16:35 on Sunday.

    Two people had to be released after being left trapped inside their vehicles. A woman sustained serious leg injuries, one man suffered leg and chest injuries and another man sustained a broken arm.

    One man was flown to Dorchester for treatment, and the other two were taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

    Officers said: "None of the injuries are believed to be serious or life-changing."

    The road was closed for more than five hours for an investigation and police have appealed for witnesses and dashcam footage.

    Devon Doctors has taken charge of Somerset's struggling out-of-hours GP service.

    It was announced last month Devon Doctors Ltd would take over from private company Vocare following a series of damning inspection reports from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

    Last April, government inspectors found the service run by Vocare to be inadequate. The service was also deemed "unacceptable" by the county's clinical commissioning group.

    Vocare has previously apologised for not meeting expected standards and claimed changes had been made.

    Devon Doctors managers said the take-over would be "challenging" but they were confident they could improve the service.

    Fourteen traffic offence tickets were issued within the space of an hour on Sunday in Exeter after people kept driving the wrong way down a new one-way system in the city centre, police say.

    The recently introduced new system sees entering Belgrave Road from Summerland Street now being prohibited.

    Con Amelia Hawkins, of Devon and Cornwall Police, tweeted that drivers should: "Please, please read the signs while you drive."

    Tickets handed out saw drivers receiving £80 fines and getting three points on their licence.

    "They will continue to be issued to drivers," Con Hawkins added, external.

  10. St Ives hole: Underground movements a 'regular occurrence'published at 10:04 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    Underground movements which caused a 40ft-deep hole to open up near homes in St Ives are a "regular occurrence", a search and rescue team member says.

    The 3ft (1m) wide hole, thought to have been caused after ground gave way above a disused mineshaft, appeared over the weekend.

    Jim Gallienne, from Cornwall Search and Rescue, who has been involved in the operation, said: "The ground beneath us is moving all the time.

    "A mine can change just with a bout of wet weather. This is a very regular occurrence."

    The update comes after officers said on 27 April, external that they had been "made aware of youths going house to house ... selling cleaning products and household goods", claiming to be young offenders on a rehabilitation programme.

    The youths provided identification and a license, but were "given words of advice and asked to leave the area in which they did as people were uneasy with their sales tactic".

    More people plan to have a summer holiday in the UK this year rather than travel overseas, a new study finds.

    Research by hotel chain Travelodge showed that almost three out of five people will have their annual summer break in this country, up by 2% on last year.

    Cornwall and Devon remain the top two destinations for UK holidays this year, said the report.

    The construction industry in the South West is facing a serious shortage of skilled workers.

    But a new skills training centre is being launched today at the Sherford new town development, near Plymouth, to recruit the builders, plumbers and electricians of the future.

    Military veterans, apprentices, and local contractors are among those being offered the chance to retrain over the next few years, and help fill the manual skills gap.

    About £370,000 has been invested in the new centre.

    A teenage skateboarder has been punched in the face during an assault in Plymouth, police say.

    Officers said, external they were investigating the incident last Thursday, which saw the boy injured when he was "approached by an unknown offender" at about 12:40 on Armada Way, near the pond area between the old Civic Centre and Plymouth Crown Court.

    After the assault, which caused the boy's lip to bleed, the offender "then left the scene in the direction of Royal Parade".

    The suspect was described as a white male, aged between 25 and 30, wearing a black t-shirt with white trim. He was thought to have been walking with a woman wearing a yellow top.

    Police have appealed for witnesses.
