    A copy of The Hobbit translated into Cornish is among an array of books which will go on public display for the first time this week.

    The books, once deemed to be of no interest to Cambridge University academics, have been kept in a 17-storey tower that was built in the 1930s to provide extra space for storage. It is now almost full with close to a million items.

    Other items that have been locked away in the tower include first editions of Casino Royale and The Famous Five, Mr Men cartoons and the interestingly titled Indoor Games For Awkward Moments.

    A 32-year old man is believed to be missing in west Cornwall, police have said.

    Officers said David Roberts was last seen in Cubert yesterday evening and could now be in the Newquay area.

    Mr Roberts is described as 5ft 8in (172cm) tall, of medium build, wearing a blue hooded top and grey jogging trousers. Police are appealing for information to locate him.

    Devon County Council has paid out nearly £70,000 in compensation in the last three years as a result of poor road conditions.

    Claims can be made to Devon County Council if it is believed that the actions when maintaining the roads by the county have been negligent and have resulted in vehicle damage, personal injury or property damage.

    A request under the Freedom of Information Act to Devon County Council asked how many successful compensation claims (ie: that resulted in compensation being paid out) had been made for poor road conditions in 2015/16, 2016/17 and 2017/18.

    The results revealed there were 252 successful claims between 2015 and 2017, totalling £68,082.

    The total amounts paid were:

    • 2015: £23,770 for 86 claims
    • 2016: £24,084 for 95 claims
    • 2017: £20,228 for 71 claims

    For a claim to be successful, it would have to be shown that any loss or damage was as a result of the council's negligence.

    A trawler which partly went over on its side in Newlyn Harbour has righted itself, coastguards say.

    Lifeboats were dispatched just after midday after the 25m twin rig trawler Ellie-Adhamh WD206, from Rosslare, Ireland, got into difficulty alongside the harbour's north pier, Penlee Lifeboat said.

    Eight people were on board, including two fishery officers, who were all caught in the fish room when the trawler went over after a mooring line snapped at low tide, causing the Irish vessel to "heel over, external".

    Coastguards in Falmouth said no-one was injured and there was no fuel leakage.

    They added: "Penlee Lifeboat was called out to be on standby in case it took on water as the tide rose, but that turned out to be unnecessary as the boat righted itself."

    A trawler has keeled over in Newlyn Harbour, a lifeboat station says, external.

    A young Royal Navy submariner killed himself after cutting his neck with a knife an inquest has heard.

    Medical assistant Tony Ullah, 24, was found in a pool of blood by his girlfriend Iva Dasheva in the kitchen of their Plymouth flat last July.

    There were also "superficial" cuts elsewhere on his body, the inquest in Plymouth heard.

    The pair had gone out for the evening with friends in Union Street.

    Before they went out, Mr Ullah had taken nitrous oxide - also known as laughing gas, which can cause hallucinations.

    They returned about 02:00 and Ms Dasheva said he had been "little bit upset about some dreams" he had had but she consoled him.

    She found him in the kitchen later after he got out of bed.

    Coroner Ian Arrow recorded an open verdict, saying he was "not satisfied" that he had intended to take his own life. A pathologist said he had died from the neck wounds.

    His mother Amanda said after the inquest that Mr Ullah, who was "loved by everyone who met him", had "lived more in his 24 years than most people do in a lifetime". She said: "We are flabbergasted, his death was a complete shock, there are no answers."

  13. Curtain falls on theatre society's lease at town playhousepublished at 12:46 British Summer Time 30 April 2018

    A lease for Brixham Theatre held by a local society has ended, the town council has confirmed.

    Brixham Town Council said it was "with regret" that a decision by Brixham Arts and Theatre Society meant the lease has been terminated from today.

    The society gave notice last year, Devon Live reported, external, that it was to leave the building, blaming a "perfect storm" of circumstances, including the the theatre "not being viable as an independent performance space".

    During their time, members of the society had updated sound and light equipment, redecorated the auditorium and "rejuvenated an under-used asset in the town hall", the council said.

    The authority said it was "thankful for all the hard work the society had done over the last few years" and was asking if interested other community groups had proposals on "how they plan to run a sustainable theatre".

    The society, which was formed in 2007, said it still had a "packed programme of events planned for the coming months, external" and "what happens to Brixham Theatre from 1 May is entirely up to Brixham Town Council".

    Matt Baker and the Countryfile team were in Cornwall for an episode of the nature programme on Sunday night.

    Unfortunately, they seem to have placed Portreath in the wrong spot and people on social media were not happy, pointing out it looked like it was labelled about 40 miles north-east from its actual location.

    Comments included Jonny Berlin‏ on Twitter, external asking: "OK, who moved Portreath when I wasn't looking?"

    A fisherman in Cornwall was joined by an unexpected companion: a deer who was taking a long swim.

    Rowly Kirby was on the Helford River, near Falmouth, on Friday when he spotted the animal taking on the crossing.
