Hydroponic equipment confiscated from criminal operations is to be used for organic food-growing projects in schools, police say.

Hydroponics is growing plants without soil by using mineral nutrient solutions. It is sometimes employed in producing cannabis. Often, when such equipment is found and seized, it is destroyed

Police said the new project had been launched to recycle the equipment for schools.

BEES said the long-term goal was "to see every school engaging in food growing initiatives, helping promote healthier lifestyles and nutrition awareness".

Supt Craig Downham, of Devon and Cornwall Police, said they "prefer not to send items, which still have a useful purpose, to landfill" and hydroponic equipment "costs us a considerable amount of money to dispose of".

He said: "This is a win-win situation, putting the equipment to good use and saving public money."

Planning permission had already been granted for a four-bedroom home on the plot at Millgrist Meadow, Lower Board Lane, but the applicants had submitted new plans to build two semi-detached homes instead.

Unusually the site sits on the boundary of two parishes so both Carn Brea and Illogan Parish Councils were consulted and both objected.

It's difficult to understand why we are still receiving so many calls when the weather improves and why owners are still dicing with their pet's lives. It's simple - never leave your pet alone in a hot environment. Whether you're popping into the shop for a newspaper or nipping into a pharmacy to pick up a prescription, please don't take the risk."
