A petition in 2016 demanded that Oldway Mansion be handed back to the people of Torbay

The old Paignton Urban District Council bought Oldway Mansion and its gardens for public use in 1946, for £46,000.

The mansion was built and gardens laid out by the American Singer family, on the back of their sewing machine wealth.

    Quote Message

One of my options is that we should seriously consider a sale of the property. It is a very large property. If you look at what we spent, and are still going to spend, on Torre Abbey - which is approaching £17m of public money - Oldway is probably two or three times larger than that. It probably needs a huge amount of money spent on it."
