    Britain would be hit with shortages of medicine, fuel and food within a fortnight if the UK tries to leave the European Union without a deal, according to a Doomsday Brexit scenario drawn up by senior civil servants for David Davis.

    A source told The Sunday Times, external that the "supermarkets in Cornwall and Scotland will run out of food within a couple of days, and hospitals will run out of medicines within two weeks".

    The teams running Dartmoor and Exmoor national parks say they are worried a government review could undermine the things that make the parks so special.

    They were designated in the 1950s and now the government is looking at whether such parks work in the 21st Century.

    Environment Secretary Michael Gove announced last month he was launching a review into the country's natural landscapes. The move could also create a new national park.

  3. Phone app to help cut car washes 'exploiting slaves'published at 09:31 British Summer Time 4 June 2018

    A smartphone app called Safe Car Wash is due to go live online.

    Hand car washes are being targeted because it's thought criminals could be mistreating the people who work there as so-called modern-day slaves.

    The app pinpoints a user's location before taking them through a list of questions, including how much the car wash costs. If it looks suspicious, the user is directed to the Modern Slavery Helpline, external.

    A 79-year-old man has died following a crash with a motorcycle in Plymouth over the weekend, police say.

    Officers said, external they were called to the scene at Desborough Road at about 12:15 on Sunday after the crash involving an orange and white KTM 125cc motorcycle.

    The man, from the city, was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.

    The rider of the motorcycle was taken to Derriford Hospital and suffered serious injuries.

    Police are investigating a suspected ram-raid at a Sainsbury's shop in Bodmin over the weekend.

    Officers said they were called to a store in Dennison Road at about 00:45 on Sunday after reports that a blue car containing four occupants attempted to gain entry to the shop.

    Police said: "On attendance, the vehicle and occupants had left the scene. The vehicle was located on fire shortly after and recovered by police."

    A former Ministry of Defence trainer from Plymouth says he still feels "treated like a criminal" because he faces deportation under Home Office measures used to deal with terrorists and war criminals after a mistake on his tax return.

    Owais Raja is originally from Pakistan but has been living in the South West, teaching engineers, for the past decade.

    His tax return error has cost his family their NHS care after his right to work was removed by the Home Office, which was reported in The Guardian newspaper, external.

    He denied any wrongdoing and said: "We're all under a lot of stress. I'm unsure what will happen to me over the next few days."

    The Home Office has been previously accused in the national media of using a national security loophole to expel people after tax deadlines were missed or minor errors were made on forms, external.

    The Home Office said it was important to assess applications fully to ensure individuals could meet relevant rules.

    A review has been announced into this and hundreds of similar cases.

    A car park in Dawlish Warren which has been described as a "danger to life and limb" by a local councillor is being given £220,000 revamp from this week.

    Teignbridge District Council admitted the car park needed major repairs to make it safe after the comment by Councillor Gordon Hook, leader of the authority's Liberal Democrat group.

    Starting today, the council's carrying out work to fill in potholes, improve pedestrian access and drainage.

    A previous report to the council said the works would stop parking spaces being unusable because of surface water flooding during and after heavy rainfall.

    It was a busy Sunday for fire crews across Devon and Cornwall. Firefighters were called to a car, camper van blaze and a kitchen fire.

    In Chudleigh, Devon, a catalytic converter in a car caught fire at West Harcombe Cross, crews were called at about 23:00 to tackle the blaze.

    At 22:15 crews were called to a property in Teignmouth to extinguish a fire in a pile of clothes which had been thrown out of a window.

    In Cornwall, firefighters entered a property in East Looe to tackle a small kitchen fire at about 21:00. Once extinguished, crews remained to ventilate the area.

    Crews in Bodmin also dealt with a campervan fire at about 17:35.

    All fires were accidental.
