A group of sea scouts in Devon is hoping a £10,000 donation from the Big Lottery Fund will help get them back on the water.

Topsham's Sea Scouts have been without a permanent home since their old hut - which had been used since 1962 - was torn down after being damaged by floods in 2014.

Now plans have been drawn up for a new building on the old site which Nick Batchelor - chair of trustees of Topsham Adventure Centre - thinks "reflects the identity" of the town.

A species of moth found commonly in Cornwall uses cyanide-based poison to warn off predators, new research suggests.

Scientists at the University of Exeter examined the wings of six-spot burnet moths using a model that can detect ultraviolet light.

It is invisible to human eyes but visible to many of the birds that prey on moths.

Researchers found the markings did genuinely indicate poison and they had never seen any other animal eat one.

The study was published in the journal Evolution.

A golden ring which could be 900 years old has been purchased by Plymouth City Museum.

The ring, set with a sapphire and officially classed as treasure, was found by a metal detectorist in the Wembury area in 2014.

It's thought it probably belonged to a high ranking member of the clergy and dates from between AD1100 and AD1500.

High status finds made from precious metal that date from this period are extremely rare in the local area, according to Plymouth City Council.

A number of organisations also contributed towards the cost. The council has not revealed how much was paid.

Cornwall Council could increase the number of homes it plans to build across the county in exchange for funding from the government.

The target which could be built by 2030 could be extended from its current minimum of 52,500 - the equivalent of 2,625 a year.

The government is said to be starting discussions with local authorities to see if they would be willing to raise their minimum levels of planned new homes.

Andrew Mitchell, cabinet member for housing, confirmed the council was "in discussions" about whether to consider raising the number.

However, he added that as the authority had "underperformed" in recent years with the number of homes being built, if it did accept the government offer, it would "still be playing catch up".
