    The grandson of Plymouth explorer Robert Falcon Scott says his legacy is the "science of Antarctica".

    Richard Scott says what his grandfather achieved in his lifetime was "amazing" - as he unveiled a plaque in his honour in the Milehouse area of the city.

    The naval officer and his team attempted to be the first to reach the South Pole in 1912. They reached the pole but were five weeks later than Raold Amundsen's Norwegian expedition and died on their return journey.

    Today marks the 150th anniversary of the polar explorer's birth.

    The Defence Minister Guto Bebb says he realises the decision of where to base the Royal Navy's eight new Type 26 frigates is an "important" one for Plymouth.

    Some of the city's local MPs want to see the ships come to Devonport.

    Today, the government said a decision will be made by the end of the year.

    An ambulance paramedic is facing jail after being found guilty of stealing £1,400 from an 87-year-old patient.

    Mother-of-two Anna Mogford, 38, snatched Joyce Bealey's purse with her bank card and PIN number from her handbag, Exeter Crown Court heard.

    The South Western Ambulance NHS Trust driver and a colleague had been called after Mrs Bealey had fallen - breaking eight ribs at her bungalow at Stoke Canon near Exeter.

    After driving her to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, Mogford then used the card four times within nine hours to make withdrawals at three different ATMs.

    Mogford, of Longlands Lane, Cullompton, was found guilty of theft of the purse and fraudulent use of the Lloyds bank card.

    Det Con Lesley Carroll said after the case it was a "positive outcome" for the family. The case was adjourned for sentencing.

    The government says a decision on whether to base new Royal Navy war ships in Plymouth will be made by the end of the year.

    In a special debate in Parliament, the city's three MPs stressed the importance of the Type 26 frigates to the local area.

    Experts from around the globe have been meeting in Plymouth at the National Marine Aquarium to discuss plans to create the UK's first national marine park.

    The waters around the city have some of the best undersea habitats in the country, external.

    It's hoped a sea park will provide more effective marine protection of British coastal waters and work in the same way national parks do on land - such as Dartmoor National Park.

    There are currently no areas designated in UK home waters which gives the same protection.

    A 26-year-old has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a man was stabbed repeatedly on a Devon street, external.

    Police were called at 00.40 after reports of a fight involving several people in North Road, Holsworthy.

    The victim, a 29-year-old local man, was stabbed 10 times with two wounds described as serious.

    He was taken to North Devon District Hospital after refusing to be transported in an air ambulance.

  10. New case of Alabama rot confirmed in Devonpublished at 12:59 British Summer Time 6 June 2018

    A case of the deadly dog disease Alabama rot has been reported in Devon, one of four new cases in the UK.

    The new cases have been confirmed in Alphington, near Exeter, Maplehurst in West Sussex, Farnborough in Hampshire and Romiley in Greater Manchester.

    In nine out of 10 cases the condition proves fatal.

    In total, the UK has now seen 166 cases across 38 counties since the first one in 2012, with 43 so far in 2018, external.

    Alabama rot (Cutaneous and renal glomerular vasculopathy) causes lesions on the skin and occasionally in the mouth, which can look like bites, sores, wounds or stings.

    Deaths seem to peak in winter months and often occur in woodland areas, leading some vets to suggest dog owners avoid wet and muddy walks.

    Former Plymouth Argyle loanee Nadir Ciftci will leave Scottish champions Celtic at the end of June.

    The Turkish forward was signed by former manager Ronny Deila in 2015 from Dundee United but failed to impress - scoring just four times for Celtic in 26 appearances.

    Having not featured for the first team since February 2017 he was loaned out to several clubs, including Argyle.

    But the £1.5m striker failed to impress at Home Park, making just eight appearances and having his season-long loan cut in January in order to join Motherwell.

    The grandson of Robert Falcon Scott - Scott of the Antarctic - has unveiled a plaque in Plymouth to mark the 150th anniversary of the explorer's birth.

    Scott was born on the site of the plaque unveiling at St Bartholemew's Church in the Milehouse area on 6 June 1868.

    A Devon co-operative is hoping its logs will help some of the poorest families in the county to stay warm.

    The East Devon Log Bank launches today with its sights set on tackling fuel poverty.

    It's run by the Axewoods Co-operative which offers landowners and trusts free woodland management in return for the logs they chop up.

    In the style of a food bank, Axewoods Co-operative is asking for communities who know people who are in need of spare firewood to contact them.

    Police want to identify a man after "numerous incidents" of graffiti damage in Exeter.

    Two of the incidents took place at about 23:30 on 4 May and at 00:30 on 5 May on Fore Street.

    Commercial properties have also been targeted with graffiti.

    Devon and Cornwall Police want to speak to the man, pictured, as he may have information vital to the investigation.

    Anyone who recognises him or has any information is asked to contact police.

    An insurance firm is warning people living in rural areas to be alert to a rise in thefts.

    NFU Mutual says its Landrover Defender theft claim costs are up 14% since the model went out of production in January 2016. It's as a result of an increase in thefts with the firm dealing with 490 of them in 2016 and 2017, it said.

    The company added the majority of thefts are the vehicles themselves but thieves are also targeting parts such as bonnets and doors and in many cases stripping them down to the point where the vehicle is unusable.

    Cornish farmer Chris Lyne says farmers can feel vulnerable but admits some agricultural vehicles are left with keys in the ignition...

    A series of events is being held in Plymouth today to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Robert Falcon Scott - Scott of the Antarctic.

    Scott was born in Devonport in the city on this day in 1868.

    The naval officer and his team set off on their attempt to be the first to reach the South Pole in 1911, but were beaten to it and died on their return in perishing conditions in March 1912.

    A wreath-laying ceremony at the National Memorial at Mount Wise and a service at St Bartholomew's Church - which was built on the site of Scott's family home - will feature in the commemorations.

  18. Tour of Britain to pass through Devon marketpublished at 09:35 British Summer Time 6 June 2018

    The route has been revealed for the Devon stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race, external, which is returning to the county in September.

    Competitors will pass over Chineway Hill in Ottery St Mary before heading to Honiton, Uffculme and Tiverton High Street.

    The bikes will then race towards South Molton and pass through the pannier market - a first for the race.

    From there they go to Barnstaple and then out for a loop of the north Devon coast via Ilfracombe, Woolacombe, Croyde, Saunton Sands and Braunton before they finish the leg back in Barnstaple.
