  2. Further details on arrests at travellers' sitepublished at 08:13 Greenwich Mean Time 12 December 2016

    Two men from Ipswich, aged 31 and 22, one man from Wickford, Essex, aged 19, one man from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, aged 23, and a teenage boy were arrested early this morning on suspicion of violent disorder, following incidents at the West Meadows travellers' site in Ipswich last night.

    A  20-year-old man, also from Wickford, has been detained on suspicion of causing criminal damage.

    Police were called just after 22:00 to reports that a number of properties were being damaged.

    They say a number of officers will remain on the site, to offer reassurance to the community.

  8. Jury sent home for the weekend in Theydon murder trialpublished at 17:36 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    The jury in the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife at their home in Theydon Bois has been sent home for the weekend.

    The body of Maria Byrne, 34, was found burned inside the property in Morgan Crescent in February.  

    Darren Byrne, 39, of Morgan Crescent has denied murder and arson. 

    The judge at Chelmsford Crown Court sent jurors out just after lunchtime today to consider their verdict. 

    Deliberations will continue on Monday.

    A dry start to the night but it will turn cloudier with some patchy rain and drizzle spreading eastwards later. It’ll be mild and frost free with lows of 8C (46F).

    Saturday will get off to a cloudy, misty and damp start with outbreaks of light rain and drizzle. During the afternoon some more persistent rain will move in from the west, turning heavy at times with highs of 14C (57F).

  11. Richard Waterhouse will 'spend a long time behind bars'published at 17:14 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    A senior investigating officer from Essex Police has released a statement after Richard Waterhouse was jailed for eight years for the unlawful killing of Paul Olney in Wivenhoe.

    It's believed the pair had been taking drugs with another man when a disagreement ended with Paul being stabbed in the shoulder. 

    Det Ch Insp Stephen Jennings today said: "Waterhouse admitted unlawfully killing Paul Olney, accepting that he lost control and went over the top but was responsible for his death. 

    "The sentence today means he will spend a long time behind bars. 

    "No sentence will ever bring him back, but hopefully they [Mr Olney's family] can now do their best to move on and remember the good times they shared."

    A planned strike by some bus drivers in Southend, Colchester and Harlow has been called off, BBC Essex has learned.

    Members of Unite union at Arriva Southern Counties were due to walk out on Monday in a row over a possible "mystery shopper" scheme (where bus passengers report back to management about the quality of service) and alleged bullying at the firm. 

    An interim agreement has now been reached after talks at the conciliation service, ACAS.

    A man has been jailed for eight years after he admitted unlawfully killing a man at a house in Wivenhoe.

    Paul Olney, 35, was found dead at a property in Denham Close on 6 June.

    After pleading guilty to manslaughter at Chelmsford Crown Court earlier this week, Richard Waterhouse, 31, of no fixed address, was jailed this afternoon. 

    Essex Police said Waterhouse, Mr Olney and another man had been taking drugs together in the hours before he was killed. 

    There was a disagreement and Paul ended up being stabbed in the left shoulder. 

    The 35-year-old’s body was found later that day by his mother.

  14. Speedway returns as Lakeside Hammers join National Leaguepublished at 15:08 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    Lakeside Hammers will race in the 2017 season after reaching an agreement with the Arena Essex Raceway for the sport to continue at the venue.

    It comes after the club pulled out of the Elite League in a dispute over their race schedule. 

    The Lakeside Hammers are expected to join the National League next season. 

  15. Man arrested on suspicion of Colchester rapepublished at 14:50 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    A 21-year-old man has been arrested after a serious sexual assault in Colchester, police say.

    The victim said she was attacked in Lexden Road in the early hours of 27 November.

    The suspect is being questioned this afternoon on suspicion of rape and remains in police custody. 

  16. What we've learned from the killer dog inquestpublished at 14:38 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    Here's what we've found out from today's inquest into the death of Archie Darby, killed by a dog in Colchester earlier this year:

    • The dog, called Bailey, entered the living room and growled before first attacking Archie's elder brother Daniel-Jay
    • When the boys' mother, Jade Rogers, tried to save Daniel-Jay the dog snatched four-month-old Archie Darby from her arms and began attacking him
    • When police arrived at the property, Archie was face down on the floor with significant injuries
    • Jade Rogers was praised for her bravery after she managed to barricade the dog into a conservatory
    • The coroner ruled the death of Archie Darby was accidental

  18. Police concluded no crime was committed when dog killed babypublished at 13:39 Greenwich Mean Time 9 December 2016

    After the inquest reached its verdict of accidental death, Essex Police issued a statement about its investigation.

    It said: "A post-mortem examination on the dog showed it was healthy and well cared for, and there were no signs of disease or ill health. 

    "Additionally, nothing was identified in the dog’s history, or in the care of the dog, to suggest there had ever been any concern to predict an incident of this nature could occur.

    "Following a thorough investigation, and after consulting the Crown Prosecution Service, it has been established that no criminal offences have been committed."

    Recording the conclusion of accidental death, Coroner Eleanor McGann said "nobody is to blame here".
