    A large, heavily graffitied shipping container has been dropped off at the University of Essex... and the students seem to be happy about it.

    Those who have taken a closer look will find small windows placed along the 40ft container, and from there they will see artist Jimmy Cauty's vision of a "vast post-apocalyptic landscape populated only by the police and media crews".

    Cauty, who made his name as one half of chart-topping music act The KLF who later performed a stunt by burning £1m, had showcased his expansive model village as part of Banksy's Dismaland at Weston Super Mare last year.

    He's now taking this smaller version on a tour of the country - stopping at "38 historic riot sites".

    Congratulations are in order to Basildon gymnast Max Whitlock, who was named Sports Personality of the Year at the Active Essex Sports Awards, external in Chelmsford last night. 

    He beat team mate Brinn Bevan, Olympic sailor Saskia Clark and karate champion Steve Powell.

    Necrotising fasciitis is a rare but serious bacterial infection that damages tissue beneath the skin and surrounding muscles and organs, according to the NHS website, external.

    It explains that the bug can start from a relatively minor injury, such as a small cut, but gets worse quickly and can be life-threatening if not treated early on. 

    Early symptoms include - a small but painful cut or scratch on the skin, intense pain that's out of proportion to any damage to the skin and a high temperature.

    He said he was only now starting to come to terms with his injuries. 

    The 61-year-old is taking legal action against Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust over claims that his bowel was punctured during the original operation, but this was not detected for days afterwards, which led to the infection.

    Following the surgery, Andrew Lane, who lost most of his penis after contracting a superbug at Southend Hospital, said he can no longer look at himself in the mirror.

    "I lost from my belly button to just above the groin and I've not got much left of a penis," the Thurrock 61-year-old said.

    "I was super-fit before all this. I had a good body, but now I look like I'm nine months pregnant. I can't ever bear to look at myself naked.

    "The most difficult bit is not being able to have sex with my wife any more. 

    "We're a normal couple who enjoyed it as part of a healthy relationship and I do miss that."

    A 61-year-old cancer patient who lost most of his penis to a flesh-eating superbug following routine surgery is taking legal action against an Essex hospital.

    Andrew Lane contracted necrotising fasciitis following an operation to remove his prostate gland at Southend Hospital. 

    Although he survived the ordeal, his genitals were so badly damaged that he lost most of his penis and is no longer able to have sex. 

    So much damaged tissue was removed, that it also left Mr Lane with a protruding stomach.

    A spokesman for Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust confirmed it was aware of the legal case, but could not comment as it was an "ongoing matter".

    Essex is the worst place in England for fertility treatment on the NHS, an IVF campaign group says.

    Of 209 clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) across the country, only four were meeting national guidelines on IVF treatment according to the Fertility Fairness, external campaign.

    The group singled out Essex and South Norfolk for cutting all NHS fertility treatments.

    Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has said the government would step in if local health bodies were not meeting clinically agreed standards of care.

    Essex Police is warning motorists who may have had their cars modified by anyone other than a qualified engineer to have their vehicle checked out. 

    It's as the force investigates the possibility that Thomas Putt and Nikki Willis may have died as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

    A spokeswoman said: "Tests will be carried out on the vehicle, which will include establishing whether any modifications have taken place.

    "We advise anyone who has had modifications carried out to their vehicle by someone other than a qualified mechanic to have it checked as a safety precaution."

    The UK Independence Party's only MP, Clacton's Douglas Carswell, has urged the government to "get on with" Brexit.

    Speaking in today's debate, he said that as someone who enjoys "endlessly banging on about Europe", there are "endless" opportunities to scrutinise the government.

    "I suspect the sudden surge in interest on the question of Parliamentary scrutiny is about seeking to frustrate the referendum result," he said.

    The MP for Clacton claimed that Parliamentary oversight is being used as a brake against "taking back control and bringing our democracy home" - calling this "perverse". 

    "Perhaps if these efforts to subvert the outcome of the referendum persist - we might find it easier to assemble a new Parliament," he said.

    The family of Tom Putt also issued a statement this afternoon, saying the 20-year-old was "maturing into a charming, kind and lovely young man".

    "He was a whirlwind in our lives from day one, always cheeky, always smiling," they said.

    "Tom touched many people’s lives and hearts and we are so grateful for all the touching messages and kind words we have received from his friends. 

    "He was an engineering apprentice and was passionate about cars, his hockey and football, especially his team, Manchester United. 

    "He had recently achieved a long-time ambition to see them play at old Trafford and he was so thrilled about being able to do this."

    The bodies of Miss Willis and Thomas Putt, 20, were found in a car in Chelmsford on Monday.

    A post-mortem examination on the bodies of a man and woman found dead in a car in Chelmsford was inconclusive, police say.

    Thomas Putt, 20, and Nikki Willis, 23, were discovered in the vehicle in Fox Crescent on Monday morning. 

    Further tests on the pair will now be carried out, but investigations by officers indicate their deaths were not the result of a deliberate act, the force said this afternoon.
