  2. 'Police heard gunshots and screams down phone during mansion raid'published at 16:58 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    The sound of a gunshots could be heard down the phone as a man desperately called 999 for help when raiders broke into his mansion, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has said.

    Timothy Mardon, 51, was shot in the thigh after Charlie Simms (left) and Christopher Bergin (centre) wrongly mistook him for a drug dealer.

    Speaking after their conviction at Chelmsford Crown Court today, Punam Malhan from the CPS said the raid was “an unspeakably vicious attack”.

    "While Mr Mardon was on the phone to the police, the sound of a shotgun being fired through the bedroom door was heard followed by Simms screaming demands for money and threats to kill," he said.

    "Mr Mardon was left with life-changing injuries in an unspeakably vicious attack and I would like to praise him for his bravery in giving evidence against those responsible for the attack on him in his own home, the very place where he expected to be able to feel safe."

    The photos of two men, found guilty of being involved in a raid on a mansion in Sible Hedingham, have been released by police.

    Timothy Mardon, 51, was shot in the thigh after being wrongly mistaken for a drug dealer in February.

    Today, following a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court, gunman Charlie Simms (pictured left), 23, was convicted of attempted murder and aggravated burglary.

    Christopher Bergin (pictured right), 27, was found guilty of aggravated burglary, wounding with intent, and possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life.

    There are growing concern about internet trolling after a man was found guilty of sending anti-semitic abuse to a Labour MP. 

    Speaking in the Commons, Sir David said: "These cowards should have their names and addresses printed alongside the offensive post."

    A prized Audi has been crushed after a bin lorry hit a car port, causing the shelter to collapse. It happened in Colchester, Essex on Wednesday afternoon. 

    The car's owner, Mario Kyriacou, said he was shocked and upset when he discovered his vehicle in such a state at his block of flats in Ranger Walk. 

    Colchester Borough Council, which operates the bin collections in the area, apologised and said the matter was being dealt with by insurers.

  13. Mansion shooting victim thanks medical staff who 'saved his leg'published at 13:30 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    Essex Police said its officers who arrived at Tim Mardon's mansion in Sible Hedingham sound that one of his arteries was bleeding heavily after he was shot in the leg.

    Det Ch Insp Leighton Hammet said: "Mr Mardon was left bleeding to death and if it were not for the quick-thinking of the officers at the scene to use a tourniquet on his injury, doctors say he would have died."

    In a joint statement after today's verdict, Mr Mardon and his wife Sarah released the following statement:

    Firstly we would like to extend our thanks to all the officers, paramedics and emergency services who responded on the night of the burglary, and medical staff at Colchester and Addenbrooks hospitals who saved both Tim’s life and his leg. We are satisfied that Simms and Bergin have been found guilty. They directly caused harm to our family, and they will serve appropriate prison terms."

  14. Men targeted mansion 'based on the fictional notion drugs were being grown'published at 13:25 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    The men broke into a mansion in Sible Hedingham on 6 February on the fictional notion drugs were being grown at the victim’s house, police say.

    Timothy Mardon, 51, was shot in the leg through a closed bedroom door in the attack and suffered what were described as life-changing injuries.

    Det Ch Insp Leighton Hammett said: "Charlie Simms and Christopher Bergin are violent, dangerous men and Essex will be a safer place with them off the streets.

    "This was not a premeditated attack but one conjured up on a whim following a night of heavy drinking and smoking drugs.

    "It was an attack based on the fictional notion drugs were being grown at the victim’s house.

    "It is galling that they were prepared to use this level of extreme violence with such little thought and paid such little regard for the welfare of the victim."

    A 23-year-old man has been found guilty of attempted murder after the shooting of a millionaire businessman in Sible Hedingham.

    Charlie Simms, from North Road, Great Yeldham, was convicted after a trial at Chelmsford Crown Court. 

    He was also found guilty of aggravated burglary and possessing a firearm with intent to endanger life.

    Another man, Christopher Bergin, 27, of Hawkwood Road, Sible Hedingham was convicted of aggravated burglary, wounding with intent and firearms offences. 

    Kalebh Shreeve, 24, of Gibson Road in Sible Hedingham, was cleared of the charges against him.   

    They will be sentenced at a later day.

    An artist impression of the £150m site, which will include office space, an innovation centre and a hotel, has today been released by Southend Borough Council.

    It's being built on the current site of Westcliff Rugby Club, which is moving to an adjacent field. 

    John Lamb, leader of the council, said: "Looking at the images I cannot wait to see it built and finished."  

  17. Ford pays tribute to apprentice Tom Puttpublished at 12:03 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    Car giant Ford has paid tribute to one of its apprentices who was found dead in a car on Monday morning.

    The body of Tom Putt, 20, was discovered alongside Nikki Willis, 23, in Fox Crescent. 

    Their deaths aren't being treated as suspicious, but police believe they may have died from accidental carbon monoxide poisoning.

    Tom, from Leigh-on-Sea, worked as an engineering apprentice at Ford's Dunton Technical Centre for over two years. 

    Today, the car company said: "On behalf of all his friends and colleagues we would like to offer our deep condolences. 

    "Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time."

  18. Pug paralysed after being 'thrown from car window'published at 11:24 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    A pug has been paralysed after being hurled from the window of a moving car in Essex, the RSPCA says.

    The collapsed dog was found at the side of the road in Writtle on Sunday. 

    Inspectors say the tan-coloured pug appears to have been used previously for breeding as there was signs she had "several litters".

    Lucy Brennan from the animal charity added: "Unfortunately, she is very badly injured and appears to be paralysed from the waist down so it’s not clear yet if she will pull through."

    Students gathered to take a stand against the visit of a doctor from the Ministry of Defence’s chemical and biological research facility, at a time when chemical weapons were being used in Vietnam.

    Cauty's touring model village, named The Aftermath Dislocation Principle 1, is on a "pilgrimage" of 38 "historic riot sites" and will be at the university until Monday.

    Elise Kumm, video content editor for Rebel, the student media channel at the university, said: "Finding the container up on the hill next to the Ivor Crewe Lecture Hall, where there was once a real and empowering riot, felt strangely rebellious."

    Jess Twyman, art exchange director, added: "We are seeing a lot of interest from students, staff and visitors.

    "People can view it 24/7 and it has been very busy. Everyone wants to see it and also seem to want to know more about the historic context including the protests of May 68, which took place at the Colchester campus and across Europe.

    "It gets people thinking about the nature of protests and the extent of state control. They also like the playful element and peeking into another world."

  20. Theydon Bois murder trial: Judge to continue summing uppublished at 10:57 Greenwich Mean Time 8 December 2016

    A judge is to continue summing up in the trial of a man accused of murdering his wife earlier this year.

    The burned body of Maria Byrne, 34, was found at her home in Theydon Bois in February.

    Darren Byrne, 39, of Morgan Crescent in Theydon Bois, has denied murder and arson. 

    The trial is continuing at Chelmsford Crown Court and we'll bring you any updates on this case as we get them.
