    This year, Steve has won British, European and world karate titles as well as many regional titles.

    His greatest achievement this year has to be being crowned Champion of World Champions in Germany, and also captaining England to the top of the medal table.

    Saskia Clark, from Colchester, started sailing when she was eight-years-old. In our home Games in 2012 she gained a silver medal with team-mate Sarah Ayton. 

    In 2016, along with her team-mate, she took Olympic gold in Rio in the 470 class. This year Saskia has also won the World Cup Regatta in Weymouth and also in Hyeres, France.

    Part of the men's gymnastics team for Rio 2016, Brinn and the team finished just outside the medals in fourth position. 

    Brinn trains at South Essex Gymnastics Club and the past year has marked an exceptional recovery and come back into the sport. He broke his leg in two places but still made the Olympics.

  4. Essex Sports Personality candidates: Max Whitlockpublished at 16:24 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2016

    Max Whitlock

    Max Whitlock is Britain's first Olympic gymnastics champion, winning two gold medals at the Rio games, while also picking up a bronze in the men's all-round competition. 

    The Basildon-based gymnast also competed at the Glasgow World Cup, where he won the all-around with 89.299 and gained the highest scores of the competition on floor and pommel horse.

    Police want to identify these six men after a 19-year-old woman and 28-year-old man were injured in an assault in Chelmsford. 

    It happened in the High Street and then further along in New Street at about 04:00 on Saturday.

    Billericay Town, external's new owner says he is willing to pour £10,000 of his own money a week into the non-league side.

    Glenn Tamplin, who runs businesses in the steel industry, says he plans to build the fan base, taking it from about 300 to 2,000 over the next seven years.

    "I'll be losing money but in a good way to build a football club and build a community," he said.

    Basildon and Billericay MP John Baron, who campaigned for Britain to leave the EU, says Prime Minister Theresa May needs "space to set in motion our orderly exit from the EU".

    Today, MPs are expected to vote in favour of the government's timetable, of starting formal talks by the end of March, while also calling on the prime minister to publish a "plan" beforehand.  

    Conservative Mr Barton said: "It would not help our negotiations if our 'red lines' were signalled in advance to the EU – public negotiations make for poor outcomes." 

  14. Tribute to young soldier killed in A120 crashpublished at 12:02 Greenwich Mean Time 7 December 2016

    A man who died in a crash in Marks Tey on Saturday has been named as Brendan Williams, who was serving with the 7th Parachute Regiment Horse Artillery in Colchester.

    The 21-year-old was driving a Vauxhall Astra when it collided with a lorry on the A120, at 05:40.  

    Lt Col Matthew Birch, commanding officer of 7th Parachute Regiment Royal Horse Artillery, said: "He immediately took to life within the regiment, showing great enthusiasm and ethos, quickly completing Pegasus Company. 

    "He relished the role of serving within airborne forces and being in the UK’s high readiness contingency force."

    The Blues were knocked out of the Checkatrade Trophy by Oxford, losing 4-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw at Roots Hall. 

    Speaking to BBC Essex Sport he said: "Too many of our better players over the last month or two months haven't performed."

    Forget double-gold medallist Max Whitlock, Essex has a new winner - as a Harlow man has been crowned the UK's best delivery driver.

    Dave Palmer scooped the top prize (and a cheque worth £2,500) after judges at the British Takeaway Awards, external were impressed that he braved floods to deliver a pizza to a hungry family.

    The 25-year-old told BBC Essex: "I'm blown away, I never expected to win."

    The family of a cyclist killed in a crash in Buckhurst Hill last week have paid tribute to an "old fashioned charming gentleman".

    Steve Wightwick, 38, who formerly worked for the Mirror newspaper, died after the collision on Thursday.

    The family described him as a loyal, honest and very hard working father, who loved cooking.

    A 36-year-old man from the Southend area was arrested on Saturday morning on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a collision. 

    He has been released on bail pending further inquiries until 27 March.

    Southend United gaffer Phil Brown has made it on to the shortlist for the League One Manager of the Month, external award.

    The nomination says the Blues' recent success was down to Brown's "calmness and belief in his squad and methods".

    He goes up against Charlton's Kevin Nugent, Justin Edinburgh of Gillingham and Scunthorpe's Graham Alexander.

    The result is announced on Friday.
