    Braintree Town, external striker Michael Cheek, who scored the opening goal in the FA Cup second round tie with Millwall, fears he opened a torrent in reply as the League One side quickly hammered home three against the Essex contenders.

    The Iron lost 5-2 in south east London in their first ever FA Cup second round tie.

    An Essex care company boss claims that hiring and keeping good staff is becoming increasingly difficult because other jobs are seen as more attractive and better paid.

    Neil Woodbridge is chief executive of Thurrock Lifestyle Solutions , externaland said the entire home care industry is in crisis.

    He said good staff need rewarding financially, but the level of funding in the sector is too low making them the "Cinderellas" of the care industry.

    "We think that £8 to £8.50 per hour is quite low and there might be some care organisations paying as low as the minimum wage," he said.

    "There is just not enough money in the system to increase wages."

    An 84-year-old man has died following a collision with a van near Brentwood last month. 

    Eric Sparrow died in Queen's Hospital in Romford on Sunday, 27 November, said Essex Police.

    The collision happened in Greensleeves Drive in Warley shortly before 13:30 on Saturday, 19 November when Mr Sparrow was waiting to get into a parked Range Rover. 

    A Renault Master delivery van, driven by a 23-year-old man from Ilford hit him, police said. 

    Officers are investigating the collision and are appealing for any witnesses who have not yet already spoken to them to come forward.

    A police officer's been injured after being assaulted by a man he was trying to arrest near Clacton. 

    Police were called to a suspected drink driver on the Clacton-bound A133 at Weeley at 16:20 on Saturday when a flatbed truck crossed the central reservation and collided with a van.

    No-one was hurt, but the driver ran away and a man was arrested later in Arnold Road.

    The arresting officer was assaulted and he needed treatment for a knee injury, Essex Police said.

    The force said it was now questioning a 37-year-old man, of no fixed address, on suspicion of assaulting a police officer and driving under the influence of alcohol. 

    The officer was said to be recovering.

  7. Meeting to find remedy for Legionella bacteria found at leisure centrepublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    After Legionella bacteria were found at a leisure centre at Walton-on-the-Naze, local council officials are meeting health experts to discuss the way ahead. 

    Tendring District Council closed the Lifestyles facility, which it runs, on Friday. Initially it was only the showers which were closed off.

  8. Fatal dog attack on baby inquest now later this weekpublished at 08:36 Greenwich Mean Time 5 December 2016

    The full inquest into the death of a four-month-old baby, who was snatched from his mother’s arms and killed by his aunt’s dog has been rescheduled now until later in the week. 

    Archie Joe Darby died after he was bitten by the animal at a house in Colchester on 13 October.
