    BBC reporter Patrick O'Hagan has been out reporting in the snow on the A34.

    He says: "I have driven a lot of times across this part of the country and the A34 is as bad as I've ever seen it.

    "I was heading up the A34 to Newbury, I have had to abandon that. The traffic in both ways is absolutely horrendous."

  5. A339 in Hampshire 'going to be impassable' if snow continues.published at 16:07 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2019

    BBC Radio Berkshire's Chris Browning has been battling the snowfall in north Hampshire.

    He says the picture is looking bleak on the A339 between Basingstoke and Kingsclere.

    A lorry is jack-knifed at the bottom of a hill near Kingsclere and there are several broken-down cars.

    He said: "If you stop moving on a hill you’re in trouble. A fallen tree in Kingsclere is blocking two thirds of the road.

    "I’d be very surprised if people didn’t get stranded on the hills - going to be impassable if it keeps snowing."

    As the weather warning for ice in Berkshire is extended for the rest of today and into tomorrow morning, Ascot already has a three-inch coating of snow.

    The Met Office says roads and pavements across the whole of Berkshire and Hampshire will become hazardous as temperatures fall and the snow freezes.

    The warning is in effect until 11:00 (GMT) on Saturday.

    A weather warning for ice in Berkshire has been extended for the rest of today and into tomorrow morning.

    The Met Office says roads and pavements will become hazardous as temperatures fall and the snow freezes.

    The warning covers the whole of Berkshire and Hampshire, and is in effect until 23:00 GMT on Saturday.

    Meanwhile, Stagecoach has suspended its services in Basingstoke and the Reading services on the M4 has no fuel.

    The gardens at Minterne House in Dorset were due to open today for (ironically) the start of the snowdrop season.

    They remain closed due to the weather, but the white landscape is a spectacular setting for the historic property.

    With school cancelled, many families have been sledging on the slopes in Palmer Park, Reading.

    Two-year-old Joshua Workman has been enjoying the snow with his mum Emily, dad Steve and dog Gizmo.

    Mrs Workman said: "There's loads of snow and it's lot of fun.

    "We had quite a lot last year, but Joshua didn't really get it and we didn't have a sledge, so this year he has got it."
