    You don't see this very often, but Alex Vaney, 12, decided to try out his BMX on the slopes.

    His mum, Jackie, said: "Both our boys school are closed today.

    "We always come down here on a snow day. They have such a great time.

    "I am freezing, but we've had great fun.

    "They have been so creative (in the snow) It's just a different kind of education I think, it's well deserved."

    The River Cerne in Dorset is a winter wonderland in this serene, frozen scene.

    Northern parts of the county have seen nearly 5in (13cm) of snow, while coastal areas have been much less affected.

    Maintenance staff were out this morning making the area around the John Radcliffe Hospital safe.

    Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust asks that patients call the phone number on their letters if they can't make it in.

    Bin collections have been cancelled or delayed in many areas today.

    In Berkshire and Oxfordshire, only parts of Slough and Oxford will be visited by waste lorries.

    In Hampshire, there are no collections in Basingstoke and Deane, Rushmoor or Hart. Delayed collections are possible in Test Valley, Winchester and the Fordingbridge area of the New Forest.

    Isle of Wight Council reports that collections will be later than normal.

    In Dorset, Bournemouth, Poole and Christchurch are operating normally. Residents in some other parts of the county could have late or missed collections.

    The vast majority of schools across the South are closed today because of the weather conditions.

    Here's the number of closures as things stand:

    • More than 200 schools in Berkshire, giving thousands of children a snow day
    • More than 100 schools in Dorset
    • Nearly 200 schools in Hampshire, including four on the Isle of Wight
    • 105 schools in Oxfordshire
