A film of an elephant lumbering along a lane near Bishop's Castle is just some of the amazing footage which is being used to bring India to parts of rural Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

The pre-war footage of the elephant was unearthed in an archive project run by Flicks in the Sticks, external, a charity which shows feature films in village halls and community centres across the Marches region.

The film is one of a series of films, including Bollywood blockbusters, being shown to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Indian independence.

Most of the venues are also adding Indian food and drink as part of the world cinema celebrations.

The dog was spotted by a farmer and recovered by Herefordshire Council, who were able to contact its owner, Jessica Miller, who had previously used social media to try and find the missing dog.

Enforcement officer Dave Poolton said "When I saw that the dog was last registered in Derbyshire several years ago, I naturally assumed that the microchip was out of date. Nevertheless, I called Jessica, and the first thing she did was burst into tears. I have to admit, I welled up a little myself.”

    Quote Message

I genuinely believed I would never see Dasha again. He was only four when he was stolen from our back garden. As soon as we had the call from Dave, I travelled straight down to Herefordshire to get Dasha and bring him back home.”

  7. Brine-flavoured fudge: A town's salty legacypublished at 11:40 British Summer Time 16 May 2017

Since Roman times Droitwich Spa has been famous for its salt - at its peak the town produced 120,000 tons a year.

A Worcestershire company has now launched a brine-based fudge, using the salt from one of the remaining springs.

John Corbett, known as "the salt King", made his fortune from the industry in the 19th Century.

The magnificent Chateau Impney he built for his French wife still stands in parkland just outside the town - it's now a hotel.

The town had two canals built to carry salt and other goods to the rest of the country.

The Droitwich Barge and Junction canals fell into disuse after World War I, and were officially abandoned in 1939.

The Droitwich Canals Trust was formed in 1973 and volunteers began working to restore them.

The canals were officially reopened in 2011, completing a 21-mile (34km) cruising ring, linking the River Severn and the Worcester & Birmingham Canal.

In Roman times the town was known as Salinae, meaning salt works.

Salt production was the town's most important industry in the 19th Century.

Its famous brine baths were opened 1836 - they closed in 2009, but local campaigners have launched an appeal to raise £1m to reopen them.
