Worcestershire County Council has been criticised for allowing a vulnerable dementia patient to be charged thousands of pounds for care she never received.
Her treatment was investigated by the Local Government and Social Care Ombudsman, external.
The ombudsman found the council failed to assess the woman's needs properly and, though she had no ability to manage her own finances, she was then charged thousands of pounds by a care home for a service it never delivered.
After she passed away, the ombudsman found the care home wrongly chased her son for outstanding debts.
The council says it "deeply regrets what's happened" and has agreed to pay the son £1,000, as well as refunding his mother's estate.
Quote MessageHad social workers assessed her needs properly from the outset, much of the distress caused to the family could have been avoided. Instead the council left the woman and her family to deal with the care home alone."
