    A motorcyclist has died after hitting a tree near Pershore yesterday afternoon.

    Paramedics attended to the man in his 40s on Woollas Hill following a 999 call at about 17:15.

    A spokesman for the ambulance service said the man was treated and taken to Birmingham QE Hospital by air ambulance.

    Front-line police officers and firefighters will be protected if a plan to replace the fire authority goes ahead, West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner says.

    A consultation has been launched, external that could see PCC John Campion take over the running of the fire services in Shropshire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

    He said the change could save £500,000 in "governance" alone, as well as merging back-office functions such as HR and finance.

    He said job losses behind the scenes were possible, but would not affect front-line officers and firefighters.

    Worcestershire's cricketers were yesterday beaten by nine wickets inside three days by Glamorgan at New Road.

    Worcestershire were bowled out for only 129 in their second innings with Tom Fell top-scoring with 33.

    This left Glamorgan needing only 16 to win, which they knocked off for the loss of only one wicket.

    It is a rare loss in what has been a fantastic start to the season for the home side.

    West Mercia's Police and Crime Commissioner could take control of the fire services in Herefordshire and Worcestershire and Shropshire, as a consultation about the proposals is launched today. , external

    John Campion says the move would save the taxpayer £4m a year.

    The proposed changes would see John Campion become the Commissioner for Police, Fire and Crime in Herefordshire, Worcestershire, Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin.

    Mr Campion says that by disbanding the two local fire and rescue authorities he could help drive forward collaboration between the police and fire services, particularly with back office efficiencies.

    The consultation on the proposals will run until mid September.
