  5. 'Nearly 20 years since police last shot someone'published at 10:25 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

The last time someone was shot by an officer in the West Midlands was 17 years ago.

That's according to the West Midlands' police and crime commissioner David Jamieson who has been speaking to BBC WM after a man was shot by police in Rubery last night.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, was taken to hospital with a gun shot wound to the chest, West Midlands Ambulance Service said.

    David Jamieson

It happened at about 21:00 last night and Mr Jamieson said it was too early to talk of details, but he confirmed the shooting.

"There is an independent inquiry that will look into that, but just to put this in context, this is extremely rare, for officers to open fire. In fact, the last time someone was shot by an officer in the West Midlands was actually 17 years ago in June 2000 and it's been over 20 years since someone was fatally shot by a police officer."

  6. Slimming drug death: Mother 'could not believe the lack of care'published at 10:23 British Summer Time 27 July 2017

The mother of a 21-year-old woman who had taken the slimming drug DNP and died after an "overwhelmed" hospital department failed to spot the "potentially fatal overdose" says she could not believe the lack of care she had witnessed.

Carole Shipsey, who is a nurse, says she told staff her daughter, Bethany, was having a respiratory arrest. A tracheotomy was performed to try to get her breathing, but it was too late, she said.

Miss Shipsey was being treated at Worcestershire Royal Hospital when there were delays recognising her condition, a report has found.

Worcestershire Acute HospitalsTrust carried out the internal report into Miss Shipsey's death, which it shared with her family and has been seen by the BBC.

It said "an overwhelmed department led to a delay in recognition of a potentially fatal overdose and delayed implementation of cooling measures" - a treatment used in DNP overdoses.

The trust said it would not comment until after Miss Shipsey's inquest.

    Quote Message

I'm struggling even now to believe it myself - they did nothing. She was in the department for four hours before she arrested."

Traders in Droitwich say they're "thousands of pounds" out of pocket because of roadworks which could now last until the end of November.

Shop owners say they were told a six-month scheme to improve the sewers and resurface the town's High Street was due to end by the middle of October, but Worcestershire County Council has pushed back the completion date by several weeks.

This video shows how eerily quiet the High Street is at 13:00 on a weekday.
