     Art by some of the most prominent great masters, including Michelangelo, Matisse and Rembrandt, are on show in Hull as it embarks on its year as the latest UK City of Culture.

    Lines of Thought is a free exhibition of 70 line drawings spanning more than 500 years from the British Museum's prestigious collection.

    Leonardo da Vinci, Dürer, Degas, Rubens, Monet, Cézanne and Bridget Riley are also featured.

    It runs until 28 February.

    Prof Glenn Burgess, acting vice-chancellor of the University of Hull where the exhibition is held, said it could be "the single greatest gathering of artistic talent ever seen in Hull".

  14. Hull 2017: Four-year build-up endspublished at 20:59 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2017

    Hull is the second city to be given UK City Culture status, following Derry-Londonderry in 2013. 

    The city came on top in a shortlist including Dundee, Leicester and Swansea Bay.

  16. Happy Hour in Hull as fireworks wow crowdspublished at 20:43 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2017

    It was billed as a fireworks display to better London's New Year's Eve event, and it certainly didn't disappoint.

    Due to start at 20:17, it actually got going five minutes (or is that years) late at 20:22, but I'm sure no-one cares.

    The Housemartins track 'Happy Hour' soundtracked some of the display, and that probably sums it up.

  20. The thousands volunteering for Hull 2017published at 20:11 Greenwich Mean Time 1 January 2017

    More than 3,000 people have applied to become volunteers to help make Hull's year as UK City of Culture a success.

    Organisers said 1,000 volunteers had been trained and they hoped to recruit a total of 4,000 throughout the year.

    Volunteers will help greet visitors and assist during events, including the Turner Prize and a concert by Paul Heaton and Jacqui Abbott.
