  9. Private schools asked to support state-funded educationpublished at 09:39 Greenwich Mean Time 3 February 2017

    Sarah Sanderson
Political Reporter East Yorkshire and Lincolnshire

The Headmaster of a private school in Hull fears his staff will be forced to rescue state-funded education.

The Department for Education (DfE) says the independent sector could and should do more to work with state schools.

But there are concerns that could mean demands on private schools to sponsor academies and share teachers.

Teaching unions say that the government is 'passing the buck' and private schools should not be stepping in to support state-funded education.

The DfE says a tougher public-benefit test is needed to justify charitable status for independent schools.

  19. Time to get creative as BBC 1 Academy heads for Hullpublished at 17:55 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

With today's news that BBC Radio 1's Academy is coming to Hull later this year as part of the City of Culture 2017 celebrations, you might be asking just what is the Academy?

    BBC Radio 1 Academy

It started in London in 2012 as a week of workshops, events, and Q&As aimed at 16 to 19-year-olds.

It's designed, as its organisers put it, to "grab you by the scruff of the neck and give you the tools and info to Take It On to the next level".

Since it started, Academy events have taken place in cities like Londonderry and Glasgow, and now it's on its way to Hull.

It'll be a place for young people to share ideas, shout about their interests, and get some industry standard advice and experience as they work out what to do with their lives.

The main message is: "Get creative!"
