  1. Hull's tidal surge barrier transformed into interactive artworkpublished at 17:26 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Just after 17:00 this evening Hull's tidal surge barrier was transformed into an interactive artwork by artist Michael Pinsky as part of the City of Culture 2017 celebrations.  

    It's called The City Speaks and spoken words have been translated to text and then onto a scrolling screen on the west tower supporting the tidal surge barrier.

    A flood warning has been issued by the Environment Agency, external due to high tides between 20:00 and 23:30 tonight on Harbour Road and Floral Pavilion in Bridlington.

  3. Royal Philharmonic Orchestra working with Hull schoolspublished at 17:04 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Ahead of their sold-out performance tonight in Hull, members of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra have been inspiring children in the city by playing music with them.

    In this clip you can hear them playing along to the theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark by John Williams, the composer who's the focus of tonight's City Hall performance:

  4. What's the buzz? Petition to get Hull's 'Bee Lady' an honourpublished at 16:45 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    A 13-year-old girl from Hull has started a petition, external to try and get Jean Bishop (pictured) - otherwise known as Hull's "Bee Lady" - on the Queen's Birthday Honours list.

    Mrs Bishop, 93, is well-known throughout Hull for raising £110,000 for Age UK while wearing a bee costume.  

    Thirteen-year-old Ellie Broadley says: "This lady is an inspiration to everyone in Hull.She is such a lovely lady and always has a smile on her face."

    So far the petition has been signed by about 500 people.

  5. Hull-born Sir Tom Courtenay granted Freedom of the Citypublished at 16:31 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    Actor Sir Tom Courtenay has been granted the title of Honorary Freeman of the City of Kingston upon Hull by Hull City Council.   

    Sir Tom came to prominence in the early 1960s in films and is now best known for his work in the theatre.

    He helped raise the profile of the city narrating a Philip Larkin poem for This City Belongs To Everyone – the film for Hull’s winning bid to be UK City of Culture 2017.   

    Past recipients of the honour include Nelson Mandela, Alderman Sir William Alfred Gelder and Baron John Prescott.

    More money is going to be spent plugging leaks in Lincolnshire, according to Anglian Water.

    An extra £17m investment is being made across the region to tackle the problem, the firm says.

    The funding is part of more than £400m which will be used to maintain and improve infrastructure in the coming year - as well as giving two water towers in the county a facelift.  

    Emma Staples, from Anglian Water, says the company's keen to plug any gaps in the system:

    Police were called at about 10:10 this morning after reports of a body.

    The body of a man has been recovered and police inquiries are now under way to identify him.

    Hull City are off the bottom of the Premier League after securing a point by drawing 0-0 with Manchester United last night.

    United manager Jose Mourinho was so annoyed he walked out of a post-match interview.  

    Mourinho said: "They [Hull] are fighting for relegation. Every point for them is gold and I'm not critical of them."

    The interviewer asked: "What particularly did you feel that the referee should have pulled them up on then?"

    Before storming off, Mourinho responded with: "If you don't know football, you shouldn't have a microphone in your hand."

    British Steel in Scunthorpe has donated train track to help train students, external preparing to work on Britain's planned High Speed Rail network.

    The National College for High Speed Rail will have two sites - one in Doncaster and one in Birmingham. 

    Thousands of engineering students will be trained to deliver billions of pounds worth of rail contracts, including HS2.   

    British Steel has donated 41 lengths of 18m rail which will be installed inside the Doncaster site before some of it is built around.

    Peter Smith, British Steel's managing director for rail, says: "The rail will be used for the test track on which the train inside the college will be used, giving the students the chance to work on a real train."

    Scunthorpe businessman Des Comerford (pictured) says he's to launch a new political party because too many people are disillusioned with the traditional options.

    Mr Comerford says he's in talks with the Electoral Commission and says he'll launch it properly with a name and official status in four weeks time.

    He says the party will work with others to secure the best for people living in North Lincolnshire.

  14. 'It was a bit of a shock' - Mice on the loose in Hull Royal Infirmarypublished at 13:51 Greenwich Mean Time 2 February 2017

    More on the news that mice have been spotted running around a ward of Hull Royal Infirmary's day surgery unit, forcing it to close for the day.

    Julie Saunders said she alerted staff after her son spotted a mouse sticking its head out from under a door at Hull Royal Infirmary.

    Staff put blankets along the bottom of the door to stop them getting in, while she put her legs up on the chair to avoid contact with the rodents, Mrs Saunders added.

    She and her son spotted two mice, while other patients reported seeing four.

    She said: "It was a bit of a shock really, you don't expect mice in a hospital."

    A spokesman at Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust said a pest control team had been called in.

    CCTV images have been released of a man police want to speak to in connection with a burglary and an attempted burglary in villages near Grimsby, external.

    The man was caught on camera on Thursday 12 January between midnight and 08:00 at the scene of a garage burglary on Blackthorn Drive, Great Coates.

    He was then pictured again looking around the garden of a house on Stallingborough Road in Healing on Thursday 19 January.

    In both images the man is wearing almost identical clothing and police believe they may be the same man. Anyone with information is being asked to contact police.

    Several operations have had to be cancelled at the Day Surgery Unit at Hull Royal Infirmary after a field mouse was spotted.

    Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust says the appearance of the mouse - like the one pictured above in its more usual environment - is an "isolated" incident.

    The trust has contacted its local pest control service and says it hopes to reopen the unit as soon as possible.

    Hull City goalkeeper Eldin Jakupovic says: "I caught a good day" after making a string of saves to frustrate Manchester United by claiming a goalless draw last night at Old Trafford.

    The hosts couldn't find a way past the Tigers goalkeeper, who kept out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's long-range strike and Paul Pogba's driving effort in the first half.  

    Jakupovic made a total of six saves, punching the air in delight with each effort he kept out and taking the acclaim of the jubilant away supporters at full-time.

    Asked by BBC Sport if it was his best game in a Hull shirt, Jakupovic replied: "I try to be my best for the team all the time but today I caught a good day. 

    "The striker celebrates when he scored, and I celebrated to myself with some saves."

    The man behind such film score classics as Return of the Jedi, ET, Raiders of the Lost Ark and Jurassic Park - and many more besides - is being celebrated in Hull today.

    The music of John Williams will be performed at Hull City Hall by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in a concert which sold out soon after tickets went on sale.

    But Fraser Gordon, the orchestra's Principal Contrabassoonist, tells me he's also been busy with his colleagues trying to bring Hull schoolchildren a little closer to the music:
