    Building new houses could give developers a chance to improve flood protection for existing and new residents, an East Yorkshire councillor has said.

    He's been responding to concerns that new homes will increase the risk of flooding - as a conference is held on the issue today. 

    Some residents in Brough have said they're concerned about plans to build 700 new homes there which they fear may increase the flooding risk.

  2. Graham Taylor funeral due to be heldpublished at 11:33 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    The funeral of former Grimsby Town captain and Lincoln City and England manager Graham Taylor is due to take place this lunchtime.

    He died earlier this month of a heart attack aged 72.

    Growing up in Scunthorpe, he began his managerial career at Sincil Bank where he took Lincoln City to the Division Four title in 1976.

    Imps director Roger Bates will represent Lincoln City at the funeral.

    The jury's just been sent out to consider their verdict in the trial of a man charged with murdering a riding instructor found dead at a farm in East Yorkshire.

    The body of 59-year-old Fiona Southwell (pictured) was found at Grange Farm in Goxhill Lane, near Seaton, in July last year.  

    Daniel Edwards, 21, of King Street, Hornsea, denies murder.  

  4. Car park plan for former Hull hotel sitepublished at 10:52 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    A decision could be made today on whether the site of the former New York Hotel in Hull can be turned into a public car park. 

    A car parking firm wants to turn the area into a site which can hold about 53 cars and Hull City Council is due to discuss the application later.

    Council officers are recommending the application be refused due to concerns over the need for more car parking in the area, as well as the future security of the site.

    Yorkshire Ambulance Service has been rated good by inspectors - two years after being told to improve.

    In 2015, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) told the trust that safety and response times needed to be improved. 

    In its latest report, the CQC says it's been impressed by the work that has been done since then.

    A two-year-old boy and a man have been rescued by firefighters from a blaze at a house in Hull.

    Neighbours raised the alarm after the fire broke out at a house on Ilthorpe near Orchard Park in the early hours of this morning.

  9. Travel update: Major delays on some rail servicespublished at 09:22 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    If you're planning a rail journey today, be aware that there are currently problems on Virgin Trains East Coast/Hull services between Doncaster and Retford.

    It's due to a person being hit by a train.    

    Disruption to services is expected to continue until at least midday, according to National Rail Enquiries, external.

  10. Plans for Hull's Pearson Park makeover to go before councilpublished at 09:20 Greenwich Mean Time 1 February 2017

    Pearson Park in Hull could soon get a new look, if planning approval is given today.

    The Pearson Park Trust wants to restore some original Victorian features such as the bandstand (pictured) and bowling pavilion, as well as reinstating a new bridge over the lake.   

    Plans to demolish and replace the landmark conservatory were approved earlier this month. 

    The proposals will be considered by Hull City Council's Planning Committee today, but will still depend on whether money is secured from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

    Health visitors and school nurses in East Yorkshire are protesting today over possible job cuts.

    Humber NHS Foundation Trust, which provides the services, says the value of the contract it's been awarded by East Riding of Yorkshire Council has been cut and that changes need to be made as a result.

    East Riding Council says the amount of money it gets from central government has been cut and consultations are ongoing over the future of the service.
