  1. North Sea haddock taken off sustainable 'fish to eat' listpublished at 09:53 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2017

It seems there may be fewer opportunities for fisherman in our area to catch haddock.

Three haddock fisheries in the North Sea and the west of Scotland have been downgraded by the Marine Conservation Society who now recommend we only eat the fish occasionally.

Good Fish Guide Programme Manager, Bernadette Clarke, says compared to 2015 the stock numbers in 2016 were below the recommended level.

She says this will have an impact on consumers and businesses:

  2. Can you help restore 200-year-old bridge to former glory?published at 09:33 Greenwich Mean Time 17 March 2017

Would you like to get hands-on to help restore a Grade II-listed bridge on the Pocklington Canal in East Yorkshire?

Church Bridge is a landmark regarded as one of the UK's finest examples of a Georgian canal bridge.

But the structure has been deteriorating through age - and the occasional shunt from crossing vehicles - and now the Canal and River Trust wants people to volunteer to restore it.

Participants on the six-week programme, from 18 April until 26 May, will receive free training in brickwork and stonework from specialists.

    Quote Message

This is a wonderful and unique volunteering opportunity within the region to support the work of the Canal and River Trust and learn practical conservation skills of craftsman from a bygone age."

The recommendations follow a 12-week public consultation which finished in January.

If you're a numismatist (that's a coin and currency collector to you and me) you'll be excited about the arrival of the new £1 coin.

    One pound coinImage source, PA

It comes into circulation this month, signalling the beginning of the end for the round pound, which will be completely phased out by 15 October.

Here's what you need to know at a glance:

    • What will the new £1 coin look like?

Well, like the picture above! It's about the the same size as the old one but has 12 edges and is gold and silver. It also features a hologram.

    • Why the change to our change?

The new design is meant to be harder for criminals to fake and is billed as the "most secure coin in the world".

    • What do I need to do?

Shoppers can use both old and new coins from 28 March. They have until 15 October to spend old £1 coins or return them to the bank.

    • What about vending machines and parking meters?

Vending machines, slot machines, parking meters and toilet turnstiles will  all have to be adapted  to accept the new coins and reject old ones.

    • Are £1 coins worth collecting?

Old £1 coins could become collectible when they cease to become legal tender, according to experts.
