  1. Public inquiry into Allerthorpe caravan park plan draws to a close published at 13:09 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    A public inquiry into plans to put up 150 lodges and static caravans close to a small village in the East Riding is in its final day today.

    The plans for the former golf club site at Allerthorpe near Pocklington, were originally turned down by East Riding Council. 

    The developers have appealed against that decision and are hoping they can overturn it.

    More details about the two proposed locations for Hull's new ice arena have been revealed by Hull City Council.

    In a new report , the council says it could invest in a new city centre ice rink in Bond Street or Colonial Street.

  3. Health boss wants to tackle loneliness in East Ridingpublished at 12:18 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    The director of public health for the East Riding will today highlight the importance of tackling loneliness, which has proven health risks. 

    Dr Tim Allison will present his report on the issue to the council's Health and Wellbeing board later.

    He will ask the board to support a number of local pilot projects designed to address the problem and to consider what additional steps they can take.

    Figures released to the BBC show none of our local councils met their housebuilding targets over the last five years. 

    In total, Hull, East Riding, North Lincolnshire and North East Lincolnshire were 8,113 homes short of meeting their targets.

    Grimsby Labour MP Melanie Onn has criticised the lack of transparency shown by NHS bosses who run Scunthorpe, Goole and Grimsby hospitals.

    It's emerged that Northern Lincolnshire and Goole NHS Foundation Trust knew for months about missing patient referrals, but only finally admitted it to the public when they were forced to by a local council

    The mistake has meant more than 100 people waiting to see a consultant - some for cancer -were never put on waiting lists. 

    The trust continues to urge people who think they may be affected to come forward.

  7. Hull councillor wants flood defences to preserve waterfront's character published at 11:07 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    New flood defences along Hull's waterfront need to be more than just a concrete wall. 

    That's the message today from a local councillor who says the area will be permanently damaged unless the view is preserved. 

    Hull City Councillor Colin Inglis fears anything more than a concrete wall will come at considerable cost:

    The public will be able to see the Environment Agency flood defence plan for the city at an event at the Guildhall on 5 April.

  9. BBC School Reporters go into action in Hullpublished at 10:29 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    Youngsters from across East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire are making the news today as part of BBC News School Report day. 

    The programme gives 11 to 16-year-old students across the country the chance to make their own news reports for a real audience.  

    And School Reporters in our area have been very much involved. 

    We've had some reviewing the papers at Malet Lambert School in Hull this morning, and two students from Trinity House Academy have been guest editors for the David Burns Show on BBC Radio Humberside.

    Our bus has also been at Hull's Archbishop Sentamu School.

    Residents of Humberston Fitties chalet park say they'll take legal advice about their future. 

    It comes after yesterday's decision by North East Lincolnshire Council's cabinet to go with their preferred bidder to buy the leasehold of the chalet park .

    Chairman of the Fitties Community Interest Company, Bob Reynolds, says it's a very uncertain time for them:

    The cabinet also agreed proposals which will see the council offload three of its attractions in Cleethorpes: the Discovery Centre, the paddling pool, and the Meridian Showground.

  11. Public urged to be vigilant over at-risk children in railway stations published at 09:52 Greenwich Mean Time 16 March 2017

    Humberside Police is teaming up with British Transport Police to raise awareness , external about child sexual exploitation and children at risk.

    They're urging train users in East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire to be more vigilant, and officers are in Hull's Paragon station this week addressing the issue. 

    Members of the public shouldn't be afraid to come forward if they feel something isn't right, says British Transport Police.

     "Radio 1's Big Weekend just got bigger." - That's the reaction from BBC Radio 1 Controller Ben Cooper to news that superstar Katy Perry is heading to Hull for the Big Weekend in May

    Ben Cooper has welcomed the UK chart-topper's announcement that she'll be one of the headliners of Europe's largest free ticketed festival.

    He says: "The young audiences in Hull and on the BBC are in for one of the planet's greatest performers."

    The festival is now in its 14th year, having previously visited places like Exeter, Norwich and Hackney.

    Innocent people shouldn't be left out of pocket by the legal cost of fighting their case, a Yorkshire peer has said. 

    Lord Kirkhope of Harrogate is asking for a change in the law to allow legal costs to be reclaimed. 

    He's raised the issue after Kenneth Hugill, an 83-year-old East Yorkshire farmer from Wilberfoss, near York, was prosecuted for shooting an intruder on his property.

    Mr Hugill was cleared, but faces a legal bill of £30,000. 

    Lord Kirkhope said the farmer now faced a big legal bill and "that's not justice":

    More on the news that Katy Perry has been announced as the latest headline act to perform at BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend in Hull in May.

    Katy, who headlined Big Weekend in Glasgow in 2014, announced the news on the Breakfast Show with Nick Grimshaw.

    "Grimmy has told me all about Hull and we've already set up a date to the Yorkshire pudding factory," she said.

    "Radio 1's Big Weekend is always a blast and I'm so happy to be able to make it to Hull alongside the incredible line-up."

    American superstar and UK chart-topper Katy Perry will be one of the headline acts set to perform at Radio 1's Big Weekend in Hull later this year.

    Katy joined Nick Grimshaw on the BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show this morning to make the announcement, revealing she will play the Saturday night slot.

    She joins the likes of Little Mix, Kings of Leon and Stormzy for BBC Radio 1's annual flagship event on 27 and 28 May.

    The announcement that the music festival is to be staged in East Yorkshire as part of the City of Culture celebrations was made in January.
