  18. Hull MP's bid to scrap "Victorian" abortion lawspublished at 10:53 Greenwich Mean Time 13 March 2017

Abortion should be decriminalised up to 24 weeks to prevent vulnerable women from being handed life sentences for seeking terminations, a Hull MP says.

    Diana JohnsonImage source, Labour Party

Hull North Labour MP Diana Johnson says "Victorian" abortion laws containing criminal sanctions for women and doctors if they don't meet certain requirements should be scrapped.

Under current laws, it's illegal for a woman to have an abortion after 24 weeks for non-medical reasons, and each procedure must be signed-off by two doctors before it can go ahead.

Ms Johnson is due to introduce her Reproductive Health (Access to Terminations) Bill in the Commons later.

She says what she's calling for is "about decriminalisation not deregulation".

Despite the not guilty verdict, Mr Hugill will still have to pay the £30,000 he incurred for his defence.
