    The application process for the post of Humberside's Chief Constable has been reopened after only one suitable applicant came forward. 

    Justine Curran stepped down in February

    The former Chief Constable, Justine Curran, stepped down in February, 18 months ahead of her retirement.  

    Her decision to step down came after the force was told by Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary (HMIC) in November last year that it "requires improvement".  

    The position commands an annual salary of £165,000.

    North Lincolnshire can make a name for itself when it hosts a stage of the Tour of Britain cycle race on 5 September, it's being claimed.

    That's the view of Jenny Couch, who's part of the team bringing the race to the area.

    The 172km third stage of the race will start at Normanby Hall Country Park and finish in Scunthorpe.

  5. Watch: Driffield greengrocer wins prestigious awardpublished at 16:44 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    A man from Driffield has been recognised as greengrocer of the year, even beating shops which supply famous celebrity chefs.

    Andy Rafter was given the prestigious award at the National Farm Shop and Deli Awards, whose winner is chosen by customers' votes.

    A 24-hour rail strike on Northern services will go ahead after talks failed to resolve a dispute over the role of guards.

    Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members are to walk out on Friday over staffing for new trains due to come into service in 2020.

    It coincides with the first day of the Tour de Yorkshire, external cycle race.

    Northern said it expects to run "more than 40%" of its timetable and more than 300 rail replacement buses.

  9. Two Hull deaths 'caused by contaminated heroin'published at 15:09 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    Two people in Hull were killed by contaminated heroin that had made it more potent, police have confirmed.

    Toxicology tests found the drug had been mixed with the painkiller fentanyl, Humberside Police said.

    Det Ch Insp Paul Kirby said the force was also tying to establish how a number of heroin users had died in the past five months in the city.

    The tests followed the deaths of seven drug users between December and February, Hull City Council said.

    As we mentioned earlier, the Premier League's begun proceedings against clubs like Hull City over a lack of perceived concessions to senior citizens or junior supporters

    Hull City has now released a statement, in which it says:

    The club does offer concessions in the form of a priority booking window for zone 1 and 2, the cheapest seats in the stadium. Any excess capacity in these areas is then offered on general sale."

    The club adds that it has some of the cheapest tickets in the Premier League and that, by offering cheaper tickets to adults, more children under the age of 14 can attend as they need to be accompanied by a guardian.

    Hull City maintains over 30% of the people who come to the club's home matches are either under 18 or over 65.

    Staff at the University of Hull, external are to balloted about industrial action over changes to their pensions.

    The union Unison says the changes will create a two-tier pensions system, with lecturers enjoying a more lucrative deal, while support staff will see a reduction in their final pension payments.

    The University of Hull said those affected by the changes have been consulted throughout the process and significant improvements have been made to the original proposal.

    Humberside Police, external have announced they have begun a pilot which involves patrol officers wearing body cameras in Hull.

    The force says it believes it will bring offenders to justice, especially in cases of domestic abuse. 

    Those in charge say the equipment will help record vital evidence, including accounts from everyone involved.

  16. Dog ban on beaches to be 'vigorously enforced'published at 11:45 British Summer Time 26 April 2017

    A ban on dogs entering East Yorkshire's holiday beaches which is due to start next Monday will be "vigorously enforced", East Riding of Yorkshire Council has warned.

    Fines of £75 will be issued to dog owners who allow their pets to go onto the sand onto the affected beaches. 

    The beaches which will will see the ban enforced are Withernsea, Hornsea and Bridlington North and South.  

    Paul Abbott, from the council's public protection department, says its dog wardens will check on the beaches regularly to look for owners ignoring the rules.

    Action will be taken to ensure Premier League clubs such as Hull City offer price concessions to senior citizens and junior supporters, it's been confirmed.

    The issue was discussed last night at a meeting between the Hull City Supporters' Trust and the Premier League's chief executive Richard Scudamore.

    Geoff Bielby, the trust's senior representative, says the prices aren't fair for some fans:

    As we mentioned earlier, a new community shop has opened in Grimsby today with the aim of helping people living in poverty.

    The social supermarket sells low cost surplus food to working people living in areas of deprivation. It also offers debt advice and training.

    Gary Stott, who's in charge of the shop, says he hopes it can really help people to feel part of the local community:

    Rail operator Northern is warning people planning to take the train to get to this Friday's Tour de Yorkshire that services could be affected by planned industrial action.

    The strike is part of a continuing row between unions and Northern Rail over the future role of train guards.
