    A new church porch in East Yorkshire, part paid for by a contribution from the developers of a local wind farm, will be blessed by the Archbishop of York today.

    The porch at St Nicholas Church in North Newbald received a contribution from the Sober Hill Wind Farm Community Benefit Fund.  

    Today's blessing will form part of the Archbishop of York, Doctor John Sentamu's, tour of East Yorkshire in the lead-up to Palm Sunday.

    Doctor Sentamu is also due to visit St Anne's School in Welton, Melton Business Park and Elloughton School. as part of his tour today.

    Monopoly: the game that can send you to jail or make you a millionaire. And in Hull, there's the added fun of playing using local hotspots like the Humber Bridge or The Deep.

    It was back in 2004 that the city first beat off competition to get its very own Monopoly board, and now a special " City of Culture " edition of the game is being launched.

    Going on show at Ferens Art Gallery for the first time today, it features new places to play for and a whole new set of pieces to play with.

    Plans for a proposed new £20m leisure complex in Grimsby go on display today.

    A new nine-screen cinema and restaurant complex is planned as an extension to Freshney Place near the Riverhead.

    The development is expected to generate at least 100 construction jobs at any one time, as well as up to 250 long-term jobs.

    The consultation will be held today and tomorrow between 10:30 and 16:00 in the unit at the corner of Baxtergate and Clayton Walk malls.

  5. Huddersfield man dies in A614 collisionpublished at 10:12 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    A man from West Yorkshire has died after his motorbike was involved in a collision with a van near Market Weighton, in East Yorkshire, yesterday.

    The 57-year-old man, from Huddersfield, was travelling on the A614 near Easthorpe Wold just before 15:00 on Thursday when he collided with the rear of a van. 

    His family have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers.

    Police are asking anyone who saw what happened to get in touch.

  6. Dog owners warned 'check your chip'published at 09:46 British Summer Time 7 April 2017

    It's been a year since the introduction of compulsory microchipping, and thousands of dogs can now be reunited with their families if they are lost or stolen - with 88% of owners in our region having their pets fitted with a chip.

    However, it's vital that owners make sure the microchip details are kept up-to-date so they can be easily contacted if their pet is lost or stolen.

    Of the 4,130 stray and abandoned dogs that remained unclaimed in local authority kennels in our region last year, 10% couldn't be reunited with their owners - simply because they didn’t have up-to-date microchip details.

    You might remember yesterday that I mentioned Boothferry Primary school in Goole was up for a national award for its efforts in getting pupils travelling in a healthier way.

    Boothferry has already been named the best in the region for the number of pupils getting on their bikes to travel to school - about 20% of the school population.

    In fact, it won the Primary School of the Region award at the North East, Yorkshire and Humber Regional Modeshift STARS award.

    But, at a ceremony in London yesterday, the school sadly just missed out on winning the national final.

    There's anger this morning from some sports fans who say the company which runs Hull's KCOM Stadium isn't listening to their concerns about its new turnstile system.

    Fan groups from Hull City, Hull FC and the national Football Supporters Federation say people have faced lengthy delays to get into the ground all season, with many missing the opening stages of matches. 

    They say the problems have arisen since a new electronic system was put in place in August, and the issues haven't yet been sorted. 

    The council-led group which monitors safety at the ground has now ordered the Superstadium Management Company to carry out a full investigation into the issues raised.

    A dream has come true for pupils at a special school in the East Riding, who now have their own coach.

    The 17-seater Sunshine Coach was provided to St Anne’s School and Sixth Form College at Welton by the children’s charity Variety, following the success of the school’s own fund raising efforts and generous donations from two local companies.

    The new vehicle will provide transport for the pupils, who have a range of severe and complex needs, to enjoy regular activities including horse riding, swimming, trampolining as well as trips out.

  16. Boogie babies: Hull mum wins Business Woman of the Year award published at 17:40 British Summer Time 6 April 2017

    A single mum from Hull's been named Business Woman of the Year at the Yorkshire Choice Awards.

    Janine Burley set up My Baby Can Dance in a bid to help babies learn through movement after she was made redundant by Hull City Council six years ago.

    There are now 44 franchises of the business across the UK, and Janine hopes her idea will take off elsewhere.

    This weekend she says she's heading to London to try to get even more toddlers learning their first dance steps.

    Around 5,000 bags of compost are to be given away free to East Riding residents next month.

    East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s annual compost giveaways will be held over two weeks at 10 locations across the area, starting in Market Weighton on Tuesday 9 May.

    All the compost being given away originated from residents’ brown bins.

    All the food and garden waste placed in the bins – including grass cuttings, hedge trimmings, small branches, leaves, flowers and weeds, all cooked and uncooked food, peelings, plate scrapings, bones, meat and egg shells – gets recycled into quality compost for the garden.

    The skipper of a drug-filled fishing boat has been jailed for 16 years for attempting to smuggle almost a tonne of cocaine into Britain.

    Michael McDermott, 68, from Waterford, Ireland, was found guilty three weeks ago of his role in the plan to get the drugs into port at Falmouth, Cornwall.

    Two other men, David Pleasants, 57, from Grimsby, and Gerald Van de Kooij, 27, from Amersfoort, Netherlands, have been jailed for 14 and 12 years respectively at Bristol Crown Court.

    Ousefleet in East Yorkshire is home to what has previously been described as the most featureless part of the UK, according to the Ordnance Survey map.

    But now, members of Marshlands Local History Group have published a new book covering many aspects of Ousefleet's history.

    They've also recorded the memories of local residents.

    The book was part-financed by a grant of £3,450 from Goole Fields Community Wind Farm Fund and has now been presented to Goole Library.
