People with serious breathing problems could get better treatment, because of research led by the University of Hull.
Scientists say they have identified chronic breathlessness as a new condition, rather than just being a symptom of other heart or lung problems.
They say it is leading to more targeted treatment for people who find it hard to breathe.
Andrew Noble (pictured), who has now been diagnosed with chronic breathlessness, said: "They showed me how to breathe properly.
"The nurses there, the trainers and physiotherapists were very, very helpful."

Don't be alarmed if you hear the sound of sirens in Grimsby and Cleethorpes later this morning.
The Environment Agency is carrying out its annual test of the flood sirens, which were installed 10 years ago.
The 18 sirens are designed to warn more than 25,000 households and businesses of imminent tidal flooding.
They'll sound at 10:00 and 12:00.

Don't this bunch look great?
I don't think they've got tickets to get into Wembley on Saturday, but they'll certainly be supporting Hull FC in the comfort of their own homes... or maybe nearby drinking establishment if their owners can take them along.
Who'd have thought dogs were so into their rugby league?

It's described as a sanctuary for some of the country's most important birds.
Whitton Island on the Humber was taken over by the RSPB earlier this year, after it was created by shifting sands.
Conservationists have spent the summer trying to improve the habitat for thousands wild birds.
In the early hours of this morning I headed out for a good look around.

Do you recognise any of these watch faces? Police want you to have a close look at them because they were stolen from a house in Scunthorpe and could be offered for sale.
They were taken from Winterton Road a couple of weeks ago and officers think those responsible will be trying to sell them on.
A Nikon camera, other jewellery and cash were also stolen in the raid. If you have seen them or know anything, call the police on 101.
Or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 - a cash reward's on offer.

A government fund that helps businesses in Scunthorpe has given out £2.2m.
The so-called British Steel Support fund was set up two years ago when the former owner of the steel works, Tata Steel, announced job losses in the town.
The money is designed to help firms operating in the steel industry supply chain and other local businesses.
The money is expected to create around 200 jobs in other businesses and safeguard another 250.
Theodore Silvester's death at Anlaby Primary School was "a tragic accident", a coroner rules.

It's one of Hull's most well-known landmarks; the place where King Charles was refused entry to the city in 1642, sparking the English Civil War.
The ancient defence walls known as Beverley Gate sit in the middle of the city centre and were given a major makeover this year as part of the city's regeneration.
But there are now claims the landmark is being damaged by children climbing on it.

Hull City have confirmed the signing of Arsenal midfielder Jon Toral for an undisclosed fee.

The BT exchange on Scawby Road in Brigg was burgled on Tuesday.
Intruders climbed over the fence and broke into two vehicles stealing four high-vis jackets.
Police are concerned that these could be used by thieves to commit further crimes pretending to be genuine BT workers.
They are warning people to be aware of anyone cold-calling and say anyone approached should insist that photographic ID be shown.
If in doubt, call the company they are working for to check they are legitimate.
