The Hull North MP is renewing her call for an independent inquiry into why almost 60 families in Hull weren't given the ashes of their babies who were cremated.

It follows a recent report by Hull City Council, which apologised to the families involved and explained about new procedures in place to prevent it happening again.

Diana Johnson MP says the internal investigation by the council doesn't go far enough in addressing the concerns of the parents affected by the scandal.

She adds that an independent inquiry is need here as the mistakes that were made in Hull are different to those in other parts of the country.

    Diana Johnson

Hull City Council said they had received a letter from the MP.

They added: "On Tuesday 25 July, we published the findings of the investigation undertaken into the handling of infant cremations at Hull Crematorium. The Ministry of Justice agreed that, rather than carrying out further historic investigations, we should concentrate our resources on continuing our work and contributing to the National Working Group, which has been set up to advise the Government and other authorities experiencing the same issues on technical considerations relating to the improvement of cremation practice.”

  2. Listen: Developer 'disappointed' at Kingswood decisionpublished at 17:13 British Summer Time 6 September 2017

    David Harrison
    BBC Radio Humberside

Six councillors voted against and four voted in favour of a new £32m retail park at Kingswood in Hull.

The plans were rejected due to fears it would negatively impact the city centre.

It was a passionate meeting with many public speakers.

I've been speaking to Tom Gilman, the managing director of Kier Property in the north.

Following the decision, Cllr Martin Mancey, portfolio holder with responsibility for planning, said:

    Quote Message

It is essential as a council that we take bold decisions to ensure the city centre continues to thrive in the years ahead. The decision to refuse the application has been made in accordance with the new local plan, which does not allocate this site for retail purposes given that there are already sufficient opportunities to meet these needs within the city centre.”

    Ferrybridge power station

A 12-hour anti-terror training exercise took place at the now decommissioned plant - but details can only now be reported.

Five months in the planning by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, the scenario imagined a marauding gun attack and a siege with mass hostage-taking.

The mission for the participants - including the emergency services - was to arrest the suspects, protect the public and rescue the wounded.

Organisers are stressing they weren't responding to any real threat, but were pleased with how it went.

It's one of a number of national counter terrorism exercises which routinely take place throughout the UK.
