  1. Litter wardens to be introduced in Hullpublished at 10:38 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    Hull City Council has confirmed that litter wardens will be introduced to the city's streets.

    It follows a public consultation with 88.7% of 970 respondents saying they support the idea of fining people who litter.

    The results mean wardens from a private firm will be able to hand out on-the-spot fines of up to £75 to anyone caught littering.

    Officials have told BBC Radio Humberside that funding for the service is still to be decided.

    It's hoped the scheme will be up and running for the start of the new year.

    A warning has been issued about the dangers of climbing on new sea defences in Cleethorpes.

    The barrier has been installed on North Beach (pictured) and the RNLI and the coastguard are warning that it's extremely dangerous to walk on because of the large gaps between the rocks.

    New research has found Hull to be one of the worst places to live for women in the UK.

    The findings, from the National Centre for Social Research for BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour, looked at eight different categories - including environment, culture, and life expectancy.

    The city was also ranked the worst place to live for women under the age of 30 due to the lack of employment opportunities.

  5. Family to be sentenced after slavery trialspublished at 08:44 British Summer Time 12 September 2017

    Eleven members of a Lincolnshire family are due to be sentenced today, in what's been called the biggest slavery case in British legal history.

    The Rooney family (pictured) were convicted last month of offences related to slavery and fraud.

    They picked up men on the streets of Hull and Lincoln and forced them to work for little or no pay, while living in squalid conditions.

    One man was held for 26 years and his family had given him up for dead.

  11. Man's pension money stolen in 'cowardly' attack in Hullpublished at 17:37 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    Police are appealing for witnesses after a 77-year-old man was robbed in Hull last week in what officers describe as a "nasty and cowardly" attack.

    It happened at about 05:00 on Thursday after the man had been to collect his pension from the cash machine at Sainsbury's on Bricknell Avenue.

    As he walked back home along Hartoft Road, two younger men approached him and one of them pinned him to the ground while the other stole £200 from his pocket before walking off.

    The victim was left shaken and with minor injuries.

    Det Insp Alison Sweeting says: "The gentleman bravely tried to fend off the men but unfortunately was overpowered.

    "We would like to speak with these two men in connection with this incident."

    A Lincoln City fan has dropped the traditional red and white scarf for something rather more revealing: a bright pink bra.

    It was all to make a point about security in a show of solidarity with fans of neighbouring club Grimsby.

    Last month, female Grimsby fans were allegedly asked to show their bras to stewards during security searches at Stevenage - an approach heavily criticised by a Grimsby supporters' group.

    Stevenage FC is now being investigated by the English Football League.

    Not one to stand idly by, Mr Chanter, 33, decided to find the biggest brassiere he could buy and invited security staff at the same ground to check him over.

    An East Yorkshire man who won a tribunal to claim a benefit allowance which helps him live with his epilepsy says the disability beneft system needs to change.

    Chris Palmer-Nash, from Hessle, was originally turned down for the Personal Independence Payment.

    Mr Palmer-Nash says that decision left him and his husband Sam in a "horrible" situation and financial difficulties:

    A charity has praised the work of a man from East Yorkshire with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) after he successfully abseiled from the Humber Bridge.

    A special hoist was used to help Jason Liversidge achieve his goal.

    Earlier this year, Mr Liversidge, who's originally from Scarborough, climbed Snowdon in a wheelchair.

    An axe-wielding masked man who demanded cash from the till at a Driffield store ran away empty-handed after being fought off by the shopkeeper.

    The intruder threatened staff at the Spar on Eastgate North at about 10:30 on Friday and the shopkeeper was left with minor injuries to his hand after refusing to hand over the cash.

    The intruder, who was wearing a dark blue hooded jacket, blue jeans and gloves, ran off towards Scarborough Road.

    Det Sgt Tom Napier says: "We are very keen to identify the man in this CCTV image as soon as possible due to the violent nature of this incident.

    "We want to hear from anyone who may know who he is. If anyone recognises him from these CCTV pictures please contact us immediately."

  17. Increase in police presence after attempted rape in Hullpublished at 14:48 British Summer Time 11 September 2017

    More police officers will be on patrol in an area of Hull, after the attempted rape of a woman at the weekend.

    The 36-year-old woman was attacked by a man in the cemetery on Spring Bank West at about 19:00 on Saturday.

    The victim was left with minor injuries to her face and arms and was badly shaken by the incident, say police.

    Officers say they're concerned the man might try to attack someone else and are advising women not to walk alone in the area at night.

    The suspect is described as white, 5ft 7ins tall, in his 20s, of slim build with short fair hair and speaking with an eastern European accent.
