Volunteer drivers for the Thames Ambulance Service, which covers Hull and northern Lincolnshire, say changes to their terms and conditions are morally wrong and will leave patients stranded.

New rules mean drivers won't be paid for fuel on the way to their first job, or returning from their last.

Thames Ambulance says the new standards allow for accurate journey payments and ensure the quality of patients' experiences is safeguarded.

But some volunteers say 40 drivers have already quit over the new conditions and some patients have complained about waiting too long for transport to turn up.

The head of Thames Ambulance Service has apologised to patients affected by the dispute.

An old and a new £1 coin

But one Grimsby business owner's been telling me that that the new pound coin is going to cost him over £1,000.

Amir Kahn, who owns a launderette in Grimsby, says he's having to replace all the coin slots on his washers and driers and has not been offered any help with the cost of updating the mechanisms.

Mr Kahn says he considered closing and says small businesses will suffer.

    Quote Message

We've been forced into a corner, we have no choice. The choice is we either spend a couple of thousand on mechanisms or we don't and we lose trade, we lose business and lose the business that we have put together."

Co-Op Funeralcare currently has premises on St John's Street in the town, but a planned new branch at a former carpet shop on Prince Street has now been given the go-ahead.

However, the sight of hearses with coffins in the area could ruin a family's day out, according to Bridlington Tourism Association.

Helen Chandler, head of operations at Co-Op Funeracare for the North and East, says the firm wants to make its services "as local and accessible as possible to families in their time of loss".

"We understand this may have prompted concerns from local residents and we're committed to working with the community to ensure they're completely clear about, and comfortable with, what our plans are," she adds.

Bridlington Town Council has already passed the plans, but the final decision on whether it can go ahead now lies with the East Riding Council.
