The company is planning to cut almost 2,000 jobs in its military, maritime and intelligence services to streamline it's business.

It's only six years since 900 jobs losses were announced at the Brough site in 2011.

We are also announcing actions at some of our UK sites to align our workforce capacity more closely with near-term demand and enhance our competitive position to secure new business. Those actions are necessary and the right thing to do for our company, but unfortunately include proposed redundancies at a number of operations. I recognise this will be difficult news for some of our employees and we are committed to do everything we can to support those affected."

Pensioners say future benefits will not match those they are currently receiving and they could be left struggling to make ends meet.

The Scunthorpe MP Nic Dakin says there is a lot of uncertainty about the future of the British Steel pension scheme and the government needs to intervene to end the uncertainty.

The British Steel Pension Scheme says it understand its members are concerned and will be on hand to help.

The boxer, who was taking part in the opening of a new sports pavilion in Hessle at the weekend, said he was now taking time to relax with his family at home in Hull before deciding on his future.

He spoke of how difficult it had been to cope with the loss of his dad who died just two weeks before the most important fight of the boxer's career:

  17. Region's chippies urged to buy sustainably-sourced fishpublished at 14:58 British Summer Time 9 October 2017

Fish and chip shops in East Yorkshire and northern Lincolnshire are being urged to join a scheme it's hoped will encourage sustainable fishing.

    Fish and Chips

Only nine chippies in the region have so far signed up to the Marine Stewardship Council's blue badge initiative which means they only sell fish from areas which haven't been overfished.

Paperwork, lack of customer demand and cost are being blamed for the low number, but the MSC says it's now brought its charges down in a bid to attract more members.

Geoff Whitehead, from Whitehead's Fish and Chips in Hornsea, says the cost of being part of the scheme is worth paying:

    Quote Message

It's the right thing to do. You have to look after the fish stocks, end of story. If you don't, you don't have any fish and we don't have a business."
