About 7,500 people, many with an inherited bleeding disorder called haemophilia, were given blood products infected with hepatitis C and HIV in the 1970s and 80s. At least 2,400 died as a result.

The UK-wide inquiry will now be the responsibility of the Cabinet Office - a decision made after victims and families expressed strong views over the involvement of the Department of Health.

Mrs Johnson, who's the co-chair of the All-Parliamentary Group on Haemophilia and Contaminated Blood, said in a statement: "This shows the Prime Minister has listened to the overwhelming and unanimous opposition to this inquiry being led by a department so implicated in this disaster."

She added that she now hoped those affected "may finally achieve justice for this appalling tragedy".

The announcement by the RMT union comes after talks aimed at resolving a row over the role of guards "collapsed".

The industrial action is over plans to make train doors driver-only operated.

Rail companies have said this means the guard's role will change but some workers believe safety procedures would be compromised.

Concerns have been raised over the proposed takeover of Goole Academy by the Delta Academies Trust.

Delta, which is the Department for Education's preferred bidder, rebranded after it was found to be under-performing as The School Partnership Trust.

Paul Tarn, Delta chief executive, says schools in Goole are "crying out for some leadership and outcomes" and he believes the takeover will be an "opportunity" for the town and its children.
