    A woman threw a barrel of water over a burglar during a confrontation at her house in Beverley on Wednesday evening.

    The man fled after being discovered by the woman who had returned to her home in Curlew Close at about 18:00 yesterday.

    The burglar, who ran away in the direction of Sheldrake Way and Copendale Road, is described as about 6ft tall, of slim build and wearing jeans and a grey hoodie.

    Anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously or running away from the back of Curlew Close is being asked to contact police.

    Scunthorpe United have appointed Neil McDonald as their new assistant manager, external.

    He's come over from Irish club Limerick and had previously worked with Graham Alexander at Preston North End, where he coached the youth team.

    McDonald played professional football for 15 years at Newcastle United, Everton, Oldham Althletic, Bolton Wanderers and Preston before moving into coaching.

    For anyone who's been experiencing problems with their Virgin broadband services, Virgin Media says the problem in Grimsby and Lincoln has now been fixed.

    Over 7,000 new jobs and 5,000 new homes will be created in North East Lincolnshire by 2030, according to the council leader.

    Ray Oxby says the council wants to look at creating more opportunities for young people to work in more skilled jobs like the offshore wind industry.

    Mr Oxby says senior government ministers are expected to visit North East Lincolnshire soon to see how the authority works with port operator ABP and other organisations:

    Experts are still trying to work out what caused several homes in Immingham to flood in August after heavy rain.

    North East Lincolnshire Council says initial findings show the beck near the Habrough Fields development couldn't cope with additional water from the estate's drainage system during a time of exceptional rainfall.

    Resident Hildy Badics finally managed to get back into her house by Christmas, but she's told the BBC the experience has left her "scarred".

    The council is now looking into possible preventative measures for the future.

    The first sign of builders moving in around the former BHS building in Hull can be seen.

    Barriers are now up and the council hopes demolition will begin in the summer.

    The owners of a building in Hull city centre which has been taken over by squatters have told us they will try and help the people staying there.

    MRC Estate and Lettings Agency had planned to convert the property on Baker Street into new offices.

    But on Boxing Day a group called Activists for Love moved into the offices.

    The activists say they are offering shelter to those in need and say their aim is to highlight the housing crisis and homelessness issue in the city.

    Michelle Clark, from MRC, says they will offer housing to those inside, but will also take legal action to evict the people if they don't leave willingly.

    The family of a 102-year-old woman from Bridlington who was conned out of her savings by her carer are holding a memorial service for her today, nearly four years after her death.

    Edith Negus was conned out of nearly £300,000 by Julie Sayles who was later jailed.

    The trial was told that Sayles had "coveted" the wealth Mrs Negus had saved through hard work and persuaded Mrs Negus to change her will to benefit her.

    She even arranged her funeral which the family said left them unable to grieve properly.

    In East Yorkshire new technology is being rolled out to prevent nuisance phone calls getting through to vulnerable people.

    The government says it is determined to deal with nuisance phone callers and has made it easier to prosecute those involved in making the calls.

    A former town clerk at Crowle and Ealand Town Council in North Lincolnshire has been found guilty of theft totaling £23,428

    Katy Fowler, 44, stole the money from the town council between 1 January 2013 and 30 March 2017.

    She'll be sentenced at Grimsby Crown Court on Friday.

    Plans to build 166 new homes and a new medical centre in Hull have been given the go-ahead by councillors this afternoon.

    More than 1,000 people signed a petition against the plans to build on land off Calvert Lane in Hull because of fears over increased traffic congestion.

    There were also fears that the extras houses could pose a flood risk to existing homes.

    The company involved, City Care, says it has worked with the planning authority to show how the problems can be resolved.

    A new striker's likely given Paddy Madden's move to Fleetwood, while they're reported to have made a £100,000 bid for Nottingham Forest midfielder Ryan Yates, who's currently on loan at Notts County.

    Burnley midfielder Aiden O'Neill is expected to sign on loan at the end of the month, when he's back from playing for Australia, in the Asia Under 23 Championships.

    There's also a bid in for Bradford City defender Tony McMahon.

    In Hornsea a flood warning is in place because of this evening's high tide. Unsettled weather is leading to waves overtopping and spray is being forecast between 17:15 and 19:30

    In Hessle there is particular concern for the Country Park Inn on the foreshore. This is because of strong westerly winds combined with high astronomic tide levels which, will cause wind-blown waves and spray between 19:00 and 21:00 tonight.

    There are also flood alerts along the coast from Flamborough right round to Goole.

    Managers at Scunthorpe and Grimsby hospitals have decided to postpone all non-emergency operations until the end of January to help ease winter pressures.

    They say they're in the process of reviewing appointments and will contact patients directly to re-arrange their treatment where necessary.

    A number of routine outpatient clinics and day cases will also be cancelled to free up staff to care for the most serious and urgent cases.

    Hull and East Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust say they have continued with the majority of elective surgery as planned over the last two weeks, with fewer than 30 procedures cancelled.

    Police have released a CCTV image of two men they want to speak to after a woman was knocked out during an assault in Hull.

    The incident happened on Anlaby Road on Saturday 23 December at about 01:50.

    During the incident the victim, who is in her 50s, fell backwards and was knocked unconscious.

    A rare piece of jewellery worth tens of thousands of pounds which was found in a field in East Yorkshire, is being auctioned today.

    Adam Day from Hull found the bishop's ring, which dates from the 15th Century, near Beverley Minster.

    The ring, which features an engraving of St George, has a guide price of between £8,000 to £10,000.

    Adam Staples, from Hansons Auctioneers, said the 20-carat gold ring probably belonged to a bishop, or nobleman.
